DesDownunder
My grandfather said to me that neither side of politics would do anything for the ordinary working person, but that the Left would do less against us. Sometimes I wonder just how much less they could do. As for the Right wing, I guess they will never be the lesser of two evils. Link to comment
colinian
I have to add for completeness that as a child neither I nor my family ever had a dog. Or a cat. Or a rabbit. I'm allergic to all three species, and so is my sister Liz. But I did have a red-neck turtle (that I won at a grammar school fair), hamsters (two, both female), a guinea pig (which isn't related to the species we usually call pig, unlike The Donald), and several snakes (a garter snake that we found and captured when hiking on Mount Diablo [which turned out to be preggers and had a number of live-birth babies, each the size of a wooden kitchen match], a rosy boa which is a small boa variety that's sort of a light rose color, and a hog-nose snake that played dead when surprised or bothered, turning upside down and letting its tongue hang out the side of its mouth. My friends loved the hog-nose snake, but after a while it realized it was being made fun of by being bothered and thereafter refused to play-act being dead. Even snakes can be smarter than middle-school boys. Colin Link to comment

Pedro
Just heard a comment on the Presidential Election - "it is not about choosing the best person to be president, it is about choosing the second worse person in the world!" Sorry can't say who said it as I heard it from the radio of a passing car. I think this was from the satirical radio show 'The News Quiz' on Friday 30 September. It should be available on BBC i-Playerfor the next couple of weeks. Try:http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07wm6jj The U.S. bit is around 6 minutes 40 in. I don't really like Frankie Boyle, but here he and the other contributors' comments are on the money. warning: not for strong language, but for strong regional accents! Link to comment

ChrisR
Hurricane Matthew failed dismally in its mission to wipe out the national electrical grid. Therefore, for those who want can bear to watch, this week's slug fest - er, "presidential" debate - is scheduled for 9pm tonight (US East Coast time). Should be available on just about every news channel and internet connection going with the exception of NBC which will be airing a (US) football game. Watch either at your own risk. Link to comment
Cole Parker
I bet it'll be a tossup which gets the most viewers. Or which is the dirtiest. C Link to comment
DesDownunder
Australians watch the debates with some trepidation as sooner or later we will be subjected to similar political antics. Have mercy on us. Link to comment
ChrisR
There is something all too appropriate about the fact that the Trump Taj Mahal Casino/Hotel in Atlantic City formally went out of business and shuttered its doors this morning after being unable to negotiate new contracts with its employees. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2016/10/10/trump-taj-mahal-closes-after-years-losses/91845566/ (And Des, as brutal as it may seem, how can we possibly have mercy on the folks who disarmed the Cartwright family on the Ponderosa?!) Cole Parker
You don't have to worry, Des. Trump is setting a new standard, but when he's decimated in the election, I doubt any of your politicians will wish to pick up the ball he's so egregiously fumbled. C Link to comment
Pedro
I worry that the U.S. electorate will take their turn to stick the finger up at the political elite and the chattering classes and vote for Trump and damn the consequences. Our elites thought they were being clever calling the Brexit Vote, and proved they aren't clever at all. Our electorate put two fingers up to our lot, and the difference in the collective psyche in the U.S. is such that they could find it easier to raise the one! However the global consequences of electing Trump could make Brexit seem a stroll round the garden - not even a walk in the park. there is unseasonably early snow outside this morning, but I shall have to get ready for that stroll in the garden! Nigel Gordon
I hate to worry you folks over there but I have just noticed that the local bookies now have Trump as favourite to win. Given their track record on elections this is very scary! It seems that if you want to know the outcome of an vote, check the odds at the bookies. They were right on the General Election, right on the Brexit Vote and right on Trump becoming president. What do they know that the pollsters don't? Link to comment

Nigel Gordon
Just going to check the odds of Maria Le Pen becoming French President. Though whilst that would be a disaster for France it could be good for the UK. Would really upset the power balance in the EU. Link to comment
