Don't Forget the Bug Spray!

Today was a fairly good day overall. I've got a project that has really been much more intensive than I expected but progress is being made on it at last, and that's a good thing. Then the census releases California data and oh boy do I have some more research to do so I can answer client questions when they start coming in. Yes I'm geek enough to get excited about having to study new data make extrapolations on how the changing demographics will impact the state's politics. Best part of t

I'm 40 - I can still play video games, right?

Isn't it funny that as we get older, people expect us to stop wanting to do stuff like play video games? Yeah, okay, I turned 40 a couple of days ago. Big deal. The party was small, limited to family and just how I like it (along with a great german chocolate cake my hubbie baked for me!). Today my best friend visited and we had a great couple of hours spent playing Zombies on Black Ops. I almost don't feel like I'm 40. :) Actually, I kind of wish we'd had a game console when we lived tog

It's My Birthday and I'll cry if I want to...

Yup, so it's like the big 40 birthday has come, and pretty much gone here. Overall, it was a quiet, normal day with tons of work from a client, kids coming home from school and Tyler's baseball practice all needing to be coordinated. Then a nice dinner at my favorite restaurant (Sizzler!), and now a nice, quiet evening at home, relaxing. Nope, the world hasn't ended, and I've made it to 40, an age that there were times I thought I'd never reach, and that scared me. Only, well, now that it'

A Day In the Life...well a day of a person with no life

The Last On Nathaniel

Well, this will be probably my last thoughts on Nathaniel. He's moved on and is emerging into his 'self.' It's hard to let go of someone that you love, but I guess all parents have to go through it. Yes, he has became my son, if not legally, at least emotionally. Nathaniel and his bf moved out a week before Christmas into their first apartment. It's funny, but as much as I hated his adolescent illogical behavior and total irresponsibility, I miss having to remind him of things that he had t

Rivalry

Santa came to my school the other day to eat lunch with the kindergarten class. They borrowed one of my bases-of-operation (I don't have my own classroom, so my materials are hidden in various caches in three or four different buildings around campus) for this event without telling me. I walk in, looking to pick up some books I need for my next class and see Santa. I say hi. The kindergarten kids look over at me, gasp, and shout "HI, MR. CIVIL!!" then run over to hug me and ask me to do magic tr

27 in, 3 to go

We're on day 27 and there are three days to go. Some of our group have already finished, but Bruin and I are both a little behind. That's not bottom talk by the way. My behind is splendid as it is. We're supposed to be in the studio editing another video, but as it's snowing here I have an excellent excuse for writing instead. W00T say I! I absolutely shouldn't be here waffling, but waffling seems far more pleasant than having to decide which of my characters - all of whom I like - should be o

Why Dildo?

Timmy at, 'A Place Of Safety' recently posted this ad for making a dildo of yourself, and then asked why? So I replied thus: I can think of four reasons, Timmy. 1. It allows the individual to experience what others experience when he is topping them. 2. It would make a nice conversation piece on the coffee table. At least it would alert the overnight guest as to what he is in for, as well as letting your visiting parents know how much you have matured. 3. As a parting gift to one

Mixing Sexuality and Music With Pride

Should I use my blog to tell you of something I am proud? (inner Voice:) No, no, that would seem like bragging. (other inner voice:) Do it, do it, yes tell everyone what you did. Perhaps it would be wrong of me, but damn it, it's my blog and I'll brag if I want to. (inner voice:) don't say 'brag.' What should I say then? (other inner voice:) tell them you want to ....pst, pst whisper whisper Okay so I want to share the following little story with you all. In effort to be in the face of a

Sharpened fingers

I've sharpened my fingers, pencils, and all. Determined to succeed: I shall not fall. The wayside of NaNoWriMo is painful indeed, littered with writers, egos, and need. Yup, it's the last few hours before the off. Actually, quite a few hours, but for an Emu of little bonce (ergo weency brain) the hours stream by evermore rapidly. I even know what I'll write! Sort of, almost ... nearly. If you want to keep in touch with my NaNoWriMo efforts, I have a special blog for it called 'Camy's Idioc

More On Nathaniel

Hey, I found a few extra minutes and decided to bring you all up to date. Sorry I don't seem to find enough time to stay in contact with all of my friends here. You all need to kick me in the ass occasionally. It seems it's the only thing that works these days. This may be long, as I have a lot to tell you. Anyway...Nathaniel has been with us for quite a few months now and during that time I've found out a lot about him and more about his past. I knew that he has been running wild for the

The drooling idot vs November's pitcher plant.

Yep, it's that time of year again. The end of October approaching Novermber and [drum roll] NaNoWriMo. After last years debacle - well, I suppose I was recording an album ... but that's no excuse - where I failed, I swore I would grow up, become sensible, buy a dressing gown, carpet slippers, a pipe, and retire. I had a relation who smoked a pipe. Nice chap. My Aunt's husband. The thing was I hardly ever saw him as he was generally surrounded by a cloud of acrid, billowing smoke. So, I don't l

The "H" Word

I'm on hiatus from writing. Well, not completely true - I'm writing stories for my remedial reading students. I hate, hate, hate the books provided by the school. They're either too high-level for the kids to understand or they are too kiddy and uninteresting, or they're all about rich, suburban white kids that my kids can't relate to, so I'm writing my own. In other words, work is kicking my ass all over the place, and I'm kicking it right back. My 8th graders read like 2nd graders, and I've

Time and Sex

How long does it take to achieve orgasm? This was discussed at Joe My God, and I thought I should share my answer with you here in my blog. Under 25: From slack to spit in 60 seconds. After 40: Use it or lose it. Make sure you have at least 3 orgasms a week. (with or without a partner.) If you do this then you should be able to have an orgasm once or twice a week after 60. Chinese herbs can assist the elderly and are safer than Viagra in my opinion. (You don't need them when you are younger

Creation: a movie review

Creation: a movie review by DesDownunder Creation, directed by Jon Amiel and starring Paul Bettany as Charles Darwin, with cinematography by Jesse Hall, is an outstanding movie made with great attention to detail, both in the personal life of Darwin and his family, as well as insight into the times in which they lived. The past limitations of writing, medicine and belief, the remains of which are for some of us, barely a lifetime ago, are carefully, brutally but honestly, and sensitively visit

Election in Australia

So Australia has an election today (Saturday 21st August 2010) and our senate has 42 candidates. Our electoral system is a preferential system, so if no candidate gets 50% the vote is allocated to the next person in line on your ballot paper, or something like that. (Hey, I'm Australian and it's our patriotic duty to be apathetic. So I have spent all night looking up the policies of each main group of candidates and just to make sure everyone knows I am a left wing anarchist with progressive l

A New Kid

Well gang, the summer doldrums are over, at least for me. I've got a kid in school that started on August 18th so my fall started early. Oh yeah, you don't know about him yet. Well, I'll get to that, but first let me tell you about my Spring and Summer, and why I've been away. After 4 1/2 years of hard work, David and I have finally opened the first gay and lesbian community center in Las Cruces. No big deal you say? It is. It's the first gay and lesbian community center in Las Cruces an

Summer Fun

A little something that I'm doing for fun: I have created a wordpress blog and am featuring various classic rock groups and their music. There's a treasure of videos on Youtube. I've just saved you the trouble of sorting through all of the rubbish. Have a look. There's some great stuff there. I might even write the story of why I don't listen to Emerson, Lake & Palmer anymore. (It has a lot to do with a gymnast from New Orleans named Mark.) Cool Old Videos
