  1. 'Today' show trashes 'Brokeback'

    http://www.sovo.com/blog/index.cfm?type=bl...end=1/7/06#4381

?Today? show movie critic Gene Shalit trashed ?Brokeback Mountain? today, in a review that smacked of a gross misunderstanding of the film and short story.

Shalit called the film ?wildly over praised? and referred to Jack Twist, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, as a ?sexual predator.?

Shalit described the bleak scenery in the opening scenes of the film and the boredom of the two main characters. Then he noted that something remarkable happens, ?They have sex.?

Well, actually, Gene, what was truly remarkable was that they fell in love.

He then reduces Twist and Ennis Del Mar?s 20-plus year relationship to a series of sexual encounters instigated by Twist merely to satisfy his sexual appetite. Shalit implies that there is nothing of substance between the two tortured characters and completely misses the aching love story at the center of the film.

Shalit did offer some grudging praise for Heath Ledger?s performance, but the gratuitously negative review revealed Shalit?s surprising discomfort for the topic of two men falling in love, and yes, having sex.

His reaction is surprising because Shalit has written about his own gay son in an essay posted to PFLAG?s website. In it, Shalit expresses support for his son, writing, ?Many parents lie awake at night wondering if they played a role in the sexual orientation of their child. I think they should go back to sleep. Each child is an individual.?

No one is suggesting that ?Brokeback? is without flaws, but Shalit?s smackdown was so thorough and so focused on the gay sex depicted in the film that his review says more about him than it does about the movie.

  2. Unfortunately, we're not likely to hear a response from Grasshopper soon, for several reasons. That's a shame. His comments on subjects and his writing, and he himself, are top notch. I hope things will get better for him soon.

Grasshopper posted a Christmas greeting on "another board" (most will know the one I'm talking about) and added the following about "Brokeback Mountain":

I am kinda pissy this weekend cause Breakback Mountain is only playing in limited release and I wanted to see it like right now. Excuse me, but Jake Gyllenhaal..........I feel a cowboy story coming on.
  3. when this story was first posted, Driver was attacked pretty viciously. Probably by the same people who didn't like "Every Day Love", which I think is his best story. I heard that there were death threats directed both at him and his family.

All because "people" didn't like the way he presented some of the characters.

  4. There are even major differences between south and north Georgia. Once you go south of Interstate 70 you start to pick up a slight twang and it gets stronger the farther south you go (South Florida doesn't count).

I think that people from Kentucky have the best accent....very smooth.

  5. You need to add "All y'all"

    Etymology: Intensive form of y'all

This usage states "you all" more emphatically. For example, saying "I know y'all," would mean that one knows a group of people; saying, "I know all y'all" would mean that one knows the members of the group individually.

  6. Timmy emailed me and asked that I post a copy of the letter. It's basically the same as he posted on his site.

I received this letter from Grasshopper last night, on the 12th May 2005. I was too surprised, then, to do what he asked and post it yesterday, so here it is now. It is sad but happy to say that Grasshopper is leaving us. I have been honoured and thrilled to have been a confidant, adviser, and friend. He has decided to leave us his stories and I invite you to join with me in wishing him well and a happy journey. Regrettably there will be no e-mail or other way to contact him, but I'd think he will enjoy seeing nice remarks on the message board from time to time. I'm going to miss him a lot. - IOMfAtS

He says (and it was addressed to me, but I have changed it to be to you all):

    Dear Friends,

I have the BIGGEST news !! I am really excited right now. You know how everybody always kids me about being a real cowboy? Well, I think I'm gonna be one now :)

My uncle has asked my daddy to come help him run the ranch out west. I've been there and it's wonderful, but I never dreamed I'd get to live there  :) Daddy said that he has asked him before, but until the storms last year, we were doing okay. Now, it seems like the perfect plan. Mama and Daddy were worried that I'd be upset, but I really am excited. We have been talking about this for months and after Daddy's illness we decided to go and so now we are. This is the last time I'll see you here for a long while cause we leave next week. Our farm finally sold.

I'm feeling all kinds of ways; happy, excited, and a little sad. My uncle needs my daddy's help and Daddy says he needs mine  :) We have so much to do when we get out there. The house we will have is kinda old, but Mama says it will be cool. I get the attic  :) Grandmom will get to be with her other grandkids too.

I'll be sorry that I have to leave here, but I must help my family, and it will be such a great adventure; new animals, new country, lots of things to do and see. We sure don't want to wait to see what the hurricanes do this summer, right?

I want to thank all of my friends and people who have loved my stories and for all their kind words. It has meant a lot to me. I know there's been some yuck too and with everything going on with me I need to go badly okay? Even though I won't be here anymore my stories will and that makes me smile.

    Super {{hugs}}

    Grasshopper

Jamie's (Grasshopper's) farm was hit by 3 out of the 4 hurricanes that struck Florida last year. I don't blame them at all for not waiting around another season.
