This has to be the saddest story I have read this year, although there are too many like this.
A teacher failed to apply simple first aid properly...should have washed the wound and called the nurse. The emergency room should have taken a swab of the wound and checked for infection. Good medical procedures could have prevented this death. How very sad.

If I had enough Maker's Mark I wouldn't give a damn about hurricanes. So now that the next one seems to be on the way its time to go shopping. Oh, and thanks for the delicious idea, Merkin.

All is well here in south eastern Florida, the storm went to the west side. Probably because that fanatical homophobe of a local preacher who said he was going to turn away the storm with his prayers...because the gays caused it. I doubt if he will be showing his face in Tampa anytime soon, they got nailed.
But it was kinda windy for a few days. rattled the storm shutters a good deal and we had lots of rain. Half the area lost power, but we seem to be on in invincible power feed due to the local water plant's location. I read a lot, did some writing, and didn't even have to break out the hurricane food supply.
The stores were opened up very quickly, although there was hardly any bread and milk. But it ain't over yet, folks, we have a few months to go in hurricane season.

I am happy to be sitting here in South Florida as the storm approaches...fortunately it will be headed up the eastern coast and spare us all the major grief.

The photos that accompany this article tell the story quite well. I think we can all accept that many churches in the Houston area did a lot to help the storm victims in their recovery, but that is the nature of faith based organizations, if they are really a religious entity. Having a house and calling it a church is just a scam.
I am not a religious person and see these multi-million dollar "houses of worship" as little more than a fancy office building for the scamvangelists. The very nature of what is preached gives lie to the majestically adorned holy buildings which even the Bible calls out as sinful. Their disbursement of money to help the storm victims is little more than a return on those who gave the funds in the first place.
Without taxes, religious organizations do not contribute to the state and thus deserve nothing in return . Tax churches and I might be persuaded to grant them some repair monies, but only if they have a real house of worship and not some one room shack. Of course, if the Bible is to be believed, it would be more religious to worship in a shack than some stone edifice.
The current state of thought in government is disjointed enough to allow money to flow to churches. This will be an interesting court case:

Here in the United States if you want to be a Nazi, go join up with your fellow fanatics. The same goes for the KKK and the other hate groups, some of them sponsored in the name of religion. This level of personal freedom to play the fool, or be a bigoted idiot, is guaranteed by our laws...at least for the moment. That freedom was abridged in the past for those who would be Communist, but hey, can't love everyone's sense of right and wrong.
But nothing these days seems to rally the hate more than those who dare to be different, the gay family. Many of us feel that different is better, an expression of our personal freedom, and the rest of society should just go punt. And then you read something like this:
What's in a name, you ask? Everything good and proper, a sense of identity. Who would deny a child something so important, especially when it leads to this? No sense of hate or bigotry is worth the life of a child. We as a society must allow the freedom to make gender choices and offer support to parents and children who must make these difficult decisions. Otherwise: we all become Nazis.

Sex scandals always grab space in the news, and what young man hasn't had that Hot for Teacher moment while in school? Of course, mine was the fantasy I had about my Civics teacher, Mr. H while in eighth grade. He was such a handsome man and smelled delightful. But in the hetero world, boys crush on teachers all the time. Most of these attractive women ought to understand a relationship would be unacceptable.
I suppose being the object of a boy's desires is just too much for some of these teachers and that is why there are such strict rules about student/teacher contact. In the man with boy scenario, we always look at the man as the aggressor. In the woman with boy, I would guess that a major factor might be the boy's aggression, or at least his willingness to participate.
Society is long past the wink, wink stage of acceptance when adolescent boys might earn a pat on the back for having a dalliance with an older woman. But teachers are not in the sex trade and so those who allow themselves to be caught up in sexcapades with students will pay a heavy price for that folly.
As for the coming out: don't you think that being in the closet is far worse? Back in the day these stars had managers, handlers and studio pressure to maintain the image...they did what they were told. Fans equal money, and negative publicity endangered that formula. Now many of us in society see that there are far worse issues in the world of the famous than being gay. It has to be easier to come out when your name isn't top of the list anymore. I wish Mr. Carter lots of luck.

I get these calls, as I am sure you do, with someone claiming to be with the "Windows Security Office." Not very original and plain dumb considering Microsoft doesn't know who I am...and I never give them my name. I generally lie and say I have Apple products, or better, I thank them for the information they want to impart but could they please call me at the office...and then I give them the phone number of the local FBI office.
Today's scam call was from someone telling me my Microsoft Windows license had expired. That was so absurd I just hung up on them. I don't know who writes their scripts, but the accents are generally foreign. I just don't have the patience to deal with these clowns anymore.

One chapter does not tell a story, but it does set the scene. William King has painted the despair of the Syrian people thru the eyes of his young character. This is headline news meets fiction, and so we all should know how devastating this story could become.
I just will follow along closely and cringe at the inhumanity of the situation in that country which may not change any time soon. But what fertile ground for a story...not sure I would have the courage to use it. So far so good, my thanks to William, and welcome aboard.

The good news is that some kids see the need in others as something they can embrace, a cause they can support. Grow hair and donate it? Sure, but is it that easy? Josh Scott-Hill has the best reasons in mind and seems oblivious to the critics. He deserves a well done.

The saga concludes, and what a wonderful cruise back in time Douglas gave us to ponder.
If this had been in printed form I would have stayed up all night to read the book. I am just grateful that the author gave us an epilogue that fleshed out the lives of his characters. Readers do invest their time embracing the lives of the characters and this story would have been incomplete without that coda.
Well done, Douglas...and, of course, I must ask what you will display for us next. In reaching new heights with China Boat you have invested with the readers a desire for more, and for an author that will always be a good thing.

Hmm, shades of 1938 when Orson Welles freaked out a good deal of the American population with his War of the Worlds radio broadcast. Of course, it was announced that the program was fiction but many either didn't hear that or disbelieved the disclaimer.
Bring on the Trumpanzies who barely listen to the truth and certainly have little idea of what is in the Declaration of Independence. Perhaps they are too busy reading the directions on that box of instant brownie mix. We the People, indeed. Us gets the message, but they never will.

Thank you for sharing this, Cynus. There is nothing more important in the world than keeping open the lines of communication between the generations. As the times change it is good to see that the older gay people have lost some of their fear of gay youth. In my time it was seen as a negative, because, you know how it was perceived...and now that seems so absurd.
But this was a good healthy dialogue that allowed the viewers to see what interest the two subjects shared. I think the questions were simple and yet easily voiced on both sides. These youngsters are our future, and they need to remain informed, especially about how difficult it was in the past. Yes, they can only be envied.

The year 2016 will be remembered for a long time as the biggest mistake the Democratic Party ever made. Perhaps Hillary Clinton was not the worst choice, but she was not the best. So after Donald Trump sells the U.S. to the highest bidder, kills off our elderly and poor with the destruction of health care, then perhaps we will all remember that we had a better choice and didn't take it.
It was quite evident that Joe Biden did not want to be president after enduring the eight years of hatred and venom heaped upon the Obama administration. His life had reached a crisis point, and like a good family man he set aside ambition to care for those he loved most. Now we have a president who has little love for anyone but himself, an ego gone berserk. Don't forget Joe Biden, we may need him to put us all back together again.

There is a lot that Donald Trump doesn't know, and his cabal of advisors are just as ignorant. Perhaps they are too busy swearing allegiance to the monkey-in-charge to do a simple Google search on topics the fearless leader broaches on a daily basis. Here's an example of his latest blunder:

I find this new version of the pride flag a little absurd. The original flag celebrated diversity, not skin color. I don't imagine there are many LGBTQ people who are purple or red so the flag was just brightly decorative like the people it represents.
The new flag speaks specifically to race because of the black and brown stripes, the original was not about race. Why is it when we have a well accepted image for diversity that someone has to come along and make it about race. Is this the objective?
We already have multiple flags that speak to the Black Lives Matter movement, although I think the black flag with the white fist is a little ridiculous and is obviously meant to be confrontational. Given the chance, I would refuse to display the pride flag in this new incarnation.

I can only agree, this is great stuff.
Douglas has put his young characters in harm's way, with bullets flying and Chinese gangsters prowling the back alleys of a dark and forbidding slum. Gone is the image of teenage romance as his characters are dragged into an adult world of sinister proportions. It makes me smile.
I knew from the beginning that Douglas had embarked on an epic story of adventure and intrigue because the historical time frame dictated events that were about to enfold Shanghai. But even as that historical moment approaches, his characters are confronted with such well crafted intrigues that I do not look forward to this story ending any time soon.
Bravo, Douglas.

An interesting read, what an delightful story. Of course, we now have to wonder what language Saul speaks and where he is from...not likely Cole is going to share that bit of his imagination. If all hospitals had aides like that they would soon be out of business.
