  1. I don't think he needs to cross his fingers any more! Outstanding start to the sequel - beautifully written as always.
  2. In reading the whole story through again, one thing that really struck me is how cleverly the character 'George' is written (he's the housekeeper). He's much more of a central character than I originally realised and it's the drollness of many of his one-liners that actually provides a lot of the humour in the story. I’ve always enjoyed hearing hit versions of the songs that Tyson Hill sings by following the links at the end of the chapters, none more so than the final chapter. “Lawyers In Love” and “Jackie” were new to me, but both of them mighty songs.
  3. I got the same email but for some reason Nifty didn’t provide a link to it for ages, so to make the wait less agonizing I went back and actually read the whole story from the start, knowing I would be able to read the final chapter in context. It took a lot of yesterday and most of this morning but I did it. I can only say again, ‘Love on the Rocks’ is without doubt the finest story I’ve ever read online. Even though I knew what was coming in the re-read, I cried in the same spots again and laughed out loud many times. Marc Mcnally has an amazing way of making his characters so familiar that the reader feels like part of the family. I miss this story already and can only hope that he will write an epilogue … don’t think I’ll be able to rest until I know whether it’s twins again for Lachie and Ellie!
  4. Another great chapter. Not the finale, as I expected. Another still to come.
  5. Thanks for the link to ‘Another Way Of Being’, Paul. Not the style of story I’d normally read but the first chapter managed to hook me in. I’m up to Chapter 9 and finding it a good read. But I keep going back to the first chapter and finding myself reading this sequence: “I was almost fourteen when my grandfather died. And he was over ninety. But I never thought of him as an old man. He looked much younger than my Father, who was his son.” For some reason, I find myself laughing every time I read it. Speaking of good reads, there’s a Nifty story called ‘Working It Out’ by Dan Hanrady which is excellent: http://www.nifty.org/nifty/gay/college/working-it-out/. For the record though, ‘Love On The Rocks’ remains (for the time being) the best story I’ve read on any site.
  6. Paul, if your story's anywhere near as well written as Love On The Rocks, I'd be happy to 'talk it up for you'. As you can see in this thread, Dude's 'reviews' of the story are glowing too. I'd have thought it was nice for a change to read positive feedback about stories and authors on this site?
  7. The author has said there's only one more chapter to go, so it would probably be safe to start reading now. The final chapter will surely be posted before you get through the first 38!
  8. He should be in the spotlight. This has been an extraordinary story. The latest chapter made my cry, and it takes something special to do that. I’ve blubbered through this story and I’ve laughed out loud many times. The author has that whole bitter/sweet, happy/sad thing nailed. The characters are so beautifully defined. Sounds crazy I know, but I feel like I know them and care about them. That’s a gift.
  9. Finally got to read the latest installment. So amazingly well constructed. Sad it's coming to an end. Hope he keeps writing.
  10. Dude, '52 Panhead' used to be on Nifty but it seems to have gone. Gabriel Morgan also had his own website but I can't seem to find that either. Hopefully, like vwl says, you'll find it at cryboy. I believe the story is still a work in progress. I'll be interested to know what you think of it if you get to read it.
  11. Being Australian, it was nice to see Peter Allen's 'Tenterfield Saddler' referenced in one chapter - a fine song. And John Denver's "Seasons Of The Heart" - the song the lawyer burnt for Ty when he told him the relationship was finished - is a great song too. As for actors playing the roles, I can see Adrian Grenier as Tyson. Sir John Gielgud would have been a good choice for George.
  12. I know I said it beofre, but 'Love On The Rocks' gets better and better. It should be a published novel.
  13. 'Love On The Rocks' definitely belongs in that list. I don't know whether readers can make recommendations for Best Of Nifty. If they can I would befinitely recommend '52 Panhead' by Gabriel Murphy. It's not quite as clever as 'Love On The Rocks' but it's still an awesome read.
  14. The cliff hangers are great but all the more frustrating because of the wait between chapters. I see 'Love On The Rocks' has now been included in the Best Of Nifty list. Didn't somebody say that only happens when the story is finished?
  15. I swear this story just gets better and better. The twists and turns are amazingly clever.
  16. I see there's a new chapter online this week. Haven't read it yet but looking forward to it :)
  17. Hi Dude, I’m very new to AwesomeDude and I’m still feeling my way around. There is another longer thread about Love On The Rocks elsewhere on this site and I mistakenly thought they were linked. I initially agreed with your observation about the frequent sex scenes, but I thought more about it after I emailed the author early on in the story. I seldom contact writers but I had become so caught up in the story that I just had to write and tell him that I was absorbed in his characters. In that mail, I mentioned that I had found the storyline so engrossing that I was tending to skip over the sex scenes. I wasn’t really expecting a reply, but I received a very thoughtful response within a day, saying a lot of readers had been saying the same thing. I’m paraphrasing, but he said that he was new to writing and he had assumed that people who visited Nifty were looking for wank fodder (my words, not his). It seemed to come as a surprise to him that people were engaged in the actual story. He accepted that he had underestimated the Nifty audience, but in defence of the earlier sex scenes, he did make a couple of valid points. He felt that because the early chapters covered only a few months in the lives of the main characters, it was not unreasonable to believe that two guys who are clearly hot for each other would be “at it” all the time in the early stages of their relationship. As the story progressed, they became more of a ‘couple’ and less like rutting bulls … which is the way it tends to go in ‘real life’. Also, that because his chapters are very long, he hadn’t thought the sex scenes were too frequent, but he said he is glad to take on board the opinions of the people who take the time to read his work. I was drawn to this story for several reasons. It is very well written, the syntax and punctuation is usually spot on and the ‘plot’ is well planned. I think it’s clever the way he has two or three threads running at the same time. I’m an Australian and I was pleased to read a story set in this country, using a lot of vernacular. There aren’t very many stories set ‘down under’. There’s a lot of Aussie humour in his writing (and it makes me wonder whether he gets mail from people asking what a ‘lamington’ is, or what ‘tracky daks’ are!) His characters are quintessentially Australian and I enjoy the way they use humour to cope with pretty much everything that’s thrown at them. I’ve laughed out loud many times reading this story, and on several occasions have quite literally blubbered my way through a chapter. I see that as a skill on the writer’s part. I didn’t realise there was such a thing as ‘The Best Of Nifty’ but I would wholeheartedly support any move to have ‘Love On The Rocks’ included (along with the only other Nifty story I believe comes close – Gabriel Murphy’s ’52 Panhead’). Meantime, I’m waiting anxiously for the next chapter of ‘LOTR’. He’s by no means the quickest poster …
  18. I was referring to the two threads about this story, not just the comments above. I didn't realise they weren't linked. The earlier comments about 'Love On The Rocks' were really quite harsh.
  19. I’m surprised to read these comments about ‘Love On The Rocks’. It is far and away the best story I’ve read on Nifty. It’s got it all – character development, plot, humour, hot sex. The frequent sex scenes early on just reflect the early stages of this kind of relationship. It’s up to about 30 chapters now and the sex is no longer centre stage – again, fairly real life. It's beautifully and skillfully written - you people are too critical!
