  1. And subtitled en Francais! I admit my reading of French is a bit laboured, but I can get by.
  2. To get started being rude in sign language, click the spoilers BSL (just about ok if work is broadminded...) ASL (not in the slightest safe for work...) And nearly in the words of an old yellow pages advert, let your fingers do the talking... Added, being profane in BSL does not have the same cachet of naughtiness that doing so in speech does. No idea what the ASL attitude is though.
  3. You’ll not be surprised to hear Sherlock and Dr Watson were in fact lovers. One night, as they lay in bed, Sherlock produced a lemon which he proceeded to squeeze and rub into Dr Watson’s bottom. “Why are you doing that” asked Dr Watson. “Lemon entry my dear Watson” Sherlock replied.
  4. With the exception of the 'start menu', Windows 10 seems reasonable. However, the start menu itself is a joke. Calls your programs 'apps' and cannot be manipulated into nice groups. Not one single 'app' is any use to me, the weather I get from a variety of web sites, or even, by looking out of the window!. As a result, I'm now using Classic Shell with it and have regained the functionality I need.
  5. In the UK, on the CBBC channel there is a Newsround Special on Hiroshima today at 1730. The events are shown as a cartoon, which if you think of the target audience - makes sense to me. I've set my PVR to grab it as childrens programming on the BBC has a reputation for good dealing on sensitive issue for children and my curiosity is piqued. Ought to be available on the iPlayer so those of you with suitable UK proxies ought to be able to watch. Added at 1755. In my opinion, a good non-judgemental telling of the facts. Opinionated folk may complain, but if I was a teacher, I think I would screen it to the kids.
  6. A 'donair' is almost intelligible to UK residents as they are generally referred to as doner kebabs here. I did have to look them up a while back when an American TV programme referred to 'gyros'. The story though is a complete giggle - it's both funny and cute.
  7. I'll not be doing it again, but my short story "What are your men doing?" (on IOMFATS) was written as an outline for a much longer story. However, after I corrected the spelling etc I realised I had in fact written a rather short story, and when looked at from that point of view, to use it for its original purpose seemed rather silly. I'll not rule slightly expanding it, but only in respect of adding a bit more detail about testicular cancer, one of the largest causes of death in young men. Not that I've done anything to it for a while, but my attempt at a serial novel does have a clearly defined beginning, the end is sort of obvious, but point of the story is how it gets there. To that end, chapter one is mostly written, chapter two only has a title, but most of the action has been worked out and the technical bit of chapter three has been written.
  8. Yes, Nigel seems to do a good tale with a twist. Well worth reading.
  9. The Southwark area was still desperately poor in the 50s, I have it on good authority that it was quite common for kids admitted to hospital in that area to think bread and jam formed a meal, so goodness knows what would have happened if the pre-war population had been restored in its entirety. It would not surprise me if malnutrition formed a sizeable amount of the admissions, although I don't have medical details for that era.
  10. I've just read it. I was supposed to be doing something else an hour ago, but I quite simply could not pause in reading such a tale. Truly, truly astonishing. Few books one pays for are as well written, and although I can read at 1000 words a minute, this one deserves and got, a much slower reading. Mihangel - I offer a left handed hand-shake (UK normal one is right handed, but scouts use the left).
  11. I like it! Made me smile. It prompted me to remember the sketch featuring Billy Connolly and Kenny Everett when the doorbell goes. I'll say no more, it's very short, just watch it. Ought I suspect provoke a very similar reaction to the Mum in the story.
  12. The article is quite unusual for a piece of journalism in that it admits to not knowing the full picture, but that's to its credit - not its detriment. Something is clearly very wrong about the situation, and it could be the mother has brainwashed the children. Or not, we just don't know. But, whether the kids have been brainwashed or not, they are the victims - not the father, the judge or any part of the legal system. To punish them here is just so wrong. Where the hell is the Guardian Ad Litem for them - and if one (or three) has not been appointed, why not? It's quite obvious they need a legal friend.
  13. Isn't most of it newspeak? George Orwell was more accurate than most people think.
  14. Shame there's no subtitles on the trailer, but I love the sausage dog dachshunds use of the food mixer and the cat and the chicken - and then perhaps the cake? Rather like small boys who've always room for pudding, despite saying they're full. (There is a secondary stomach just for pudding, but it goes at about age 19...).
  15. I'll go further. This story is perhaps the best short story I've read, of any genre. I read it twice when it first appeared, and that is a rare complement in itself. Since then I've certainly re-read it again once if not twice, and will re-read it another time too. If I was going to nominate the best short story here, this would be it. And there is some mighty fine competition.
  16. 'Make sure your brain is in gear before setting your mouth in motion...' My mum and quite a lot of others
  17. Can I suggest the dedication be at the end of the story? Somehow seems more fitting and given the tale itself, gives nothing away. One of the best dedications I've read too, an awful lot of folk could learn from this as it's a prime example of describing somebody's work and the feeling one holds for them in a few words whilst losing nothing. I'm not a fan of flowery language...
  18. I did although I can't say anything without it being a spoiler. So only click if you've read the story.
  19. Not viewable in the UK... As a public service, do this: Go here https://www.proxfree.com/youtube-proxy.php Scroll down a bit and paste in this address: https://youtu.be/vo_qu3_rDME Becomes viewable then (quite why I did though is unfathomable as I'm deaf and could not watch anyway).
  20. Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. Winston Churchill, Mansion House,November 1942 A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Lao-tzu, Chinese philosopher (604 BC - 531 BC) It's a start, and a step in the right direction Me, just now...
  21. Mihangel has excelled himself here as his short story is one of the best. I suggest you put some time in your diary as it ought to be read not too fast as the descriptions are delightful and as a short story, it's a bit long at 19767 words. The length is not a criticism by the way, as it is needed to do the issues justice. I know the area quite well as I have worked for the BBC at Daventry, and have also done the canal thing too. So I can picture quite a lot of it. Read the story here: http://awesomedude.com/mihangel/habakkuks-mill/habakkuks-mill.htm
  22. Don't use Wiki for films, use the Internet Movie Database, IMDb.com Their page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3302706/?ref_=nv_sr_1 In theatres from July (ie full release), filming started last year, so it's a fairly usual time period. Note the title changed so may be that caused the confusion.
  23. There are two biblical quotes that nail vertually everyone about the wearing of mixed fibres, Leviticus 19:19 and Deuteronomy 22:11 So irrespective of what you are defending, be it gayness or shellfish eating (also banned!), you just need to research and quote the above, along with John 8 - 7 from the new testament, 'let he who is without sin' etc. Except of course, the true bigot will accept the bits that make their point and happily chose to ignore the rest. Nonetheless, it's a very useful piece and should prove useful as something to show the parents of young adults who are probably the target audience of Codeys World
