  1. Two items of Emu news interest: 1. An elusive emu that escaped from a Vermont farm has been amusing residents in communities on Lake Champlain. The 150-pound flightless bird has been spotted wandering here and there in Grand Isle and South Hero since it escaped five weeks ago. The emu's owner took out an ad in a local newspaper saying, "Free emu if you can capture it." 2. California authorities have captured an emu after the flightless fugitive led officers down a highway. The Fresno Bee reported Friday that the bird was apprehended after a brief pursuit by California Highway Patrol officers. Authorities say officers responded to a report that an ostrich was wandering along the right-hand shoulder of Highway 99 northwest of Fresno. Authorities say Madera County Animal Services took the bird into custody uninjured. Officers say they do not know whether the emu escaped a nearby farm or a moving vehicle. Animal experts say the native Australian birds can sprint at up to 30 mph. Is there a possibility that this is the same emu? Articles courtesy of sfchronicle.com Colin

  3. On the other hand, we no longer refer to those who are "left handed" where that used to be common: it's not considered a defect any longer. Perhaps we're beginning to move to a time when those who are gay aren't referred to as such because we're starting to enter a time when it won't be considered a defect. Colin
  4. Even worse, because those who need to listen get their news from sources that denigrate reasoned discussion like Harrison Ford's well-stated warning, and provides the real "fake news" that constantly counters the truth. Colin
  5. Congratulations, Cole. Being the AD Featured Author carries some heavy responsibilities. For you, these are easy to handle; they are related to what you do best, write engaging stories with believable characters. Colin
  6. The client told us that the sheriff thinks it was kids. Everything was encrypted (including whole drive encryption) so they don't have to be concerned about data theft. They were told the thieves will probably strip the hard drives. Won't do much good: the client has CMOS boot passwords on all their servers and PCs. It might be a PITA but it provides hardware theft protection. Unless a user writes the password for their PC on a post-it note and sticks it on their desk. Colin

  9. Sorry, work intervened. Doug keeps reminding me, "Someone's got to pay the mortgage!" Whatever. Anyway, I've been spending time in Portland, Oregon and just turned the job over to one of my staff. Then a client in Susanville, California had their servers and desktop computers stolen. We're helping them install and configure the new hardware, then restore their backups. I just got back. BTW, Susanville is next to Lassen National Park and the Mt. Lassen volcano. I will post chapter 16 of Life Can Be Lonely on Wednesday. I'll post chapter 17 next week. And so on.... Colin
  10. Unfortunately, work intervened and I didn't have enough time to finish chapter 16 of Life Can Be Lonely. It will be posted next week. Since everything else was ready, that's what's been posted including the final chapter of Talo Segura's novel, Milo. This is definitely worth reading. I highly recommend it. I also posted a Codey's World From Our Archive short story, Tipping Crows by Colin Kelly.

  12. Yes, all good things must come to an end... someday. On the other hand, it's like having a really great kid; it's very hard to let them go. Colin
  13. Number 1 would be difficult to plausibleize because of a large number of witnesses. (BTW, Plausibleize is actually a word, defined by Webster, 1913 as: v. t. 1. To render plausible. And by definitions in six additional dictionaries.) Colin
  14. I simply removed future place holders for upcoming chapters. Makes a little more work for me, but not enough to complain about, and it solves the guessing game problem... Bwaah Ha Hah! HAH! Colin

  16. This is what happens when someone sneaks around and tries to find meaning in the hidden depths of arcane HTML code, especially when it's coupled with the laziness of the coder of same. If someone had looked at the index page when Life Can Be Lonely was first posted (even at chapter one) the response would have been, "Ah ha! This story must be a novella because there are placeholders for only five chapters!" And, etc., etc., etc. So, if I were wont to say "Gotcha!" (which, of course, I'm not)... but I digress. To clarify: there are not and will not be only fifteen chapters in Life Can Be Lonely. How many will there be? Only the author knows, and he won't tell. Instead, it must remain a waiting game. Sorry to disappoint. Colin
  17. Umm... Who said there's only one more chapter? Not me! Colin
