  1. Life Can Be Lonely ~ Chapter 6 of a Novel by Colin Kelly. What is it like when those closest to you are not there any longer? Milo ~ Chapter 1 of a Novel by Talo Segura. One summer at their house in the South of France is much like all those previous summers. Except this year is different. Milo turns sixteen, and when his father employs Estevo, to fix things up, attractions and revelations mix with family problems, and a long held secret. We all are, or should be, familiar with the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In our tale you will learn the story that is rumored to have influenced the Brothers Grimm to take pen to paper. Is it true? That will be for you to decide. But remember, this IS a fairy tale! Click here to read the hundreds of serial novels, short stories, flash fiction, and poems on the Codey's World site.

  3. R: Most of the schools in our area work the same as in your area. Some are different, very different. For example in Davis, California, they have junior high schools with grades 7 thru 9 and high schools with grades 10 thru 12. What's wildly different is that when the school year and the semesters start and end doesn't match any other school districts, even those that are nearby like Sacramento. I built it into my story, A Time When It All Went Wrong. Chapter 39 has a description of the problems when Tony (the protagonist) is going to have to move to Davis and cope with their scheduling mess. This has nothing to do with block scheduling, by the way. Colin
  4. Like Nigel, I read using the Kindle app which is available (free!!!) for every device I have (PC, laptop, LG Android phone, Samsung Android tablet). I can start reading on one device and it syncs across all of my other devices where I can continue reading from the point I left off. I can have two books (or more) open at the same time; I use this primarily for technical texts like having an advanced Photoshop book and a Lightroom book both open at the same time and switch back-and-forth as I'm learning about something new. I can put bookmarks in books so I can reference topics (no dog-eared corners like in a printed book). I can search for words or phrases. I can highlight sections of text (and remove the highlight from something with one click). I can look up obscure words I don't know and find the definition in the dictionary. I still buy printed books – sometimes. Many technical books aren't available as ebooks. Same with most textbooks. When I was in college I constantly complained about the unavailability of textbooks in ebook format. Whatever. Colin
  5. The four high schools in our school district (Acalanes Union High School District) averaged about 1,750 students. Like most high schools in California, each high school has four grades, nine thru twelve (freshman thru senior). The middle schools and elementary schools did not and do not use this kind of block scheduling. Most students liked the block scheduling. The only ones to complain were new freshmen. Most kids rode their bikes or walked to school. I walked because I lived close to school (1.3 miles). Leaving on time to get to school on time was our own responsibility. There are no school-district sponsored busses in the high school district; the local public bus line (County Connection) schedules allow for high school starting times. We had to arrive at school by 8:30 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and by 8:00 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. But when I was in high school (I graduated in May, 2007) I and most of my friends arranged to leave home so we'd arrive at school by 8:15 AM every day. That way we could stop at the cafeteria and grab something to eat before class (we were teenagers – we were always hungry). If any of us had a meeting with one of our teachers we'd leave earlier to get to school by 7:30 AM or get someone (often a parent on his or her way to work) drop us off. So block scheduling wasn't a big deal. We coped with it regardless of how we got to school. And we didn't think it was complicated. Colin
  6. Thanks for your comments about Life Can Be Lonely. I should have explained about block scheduling, but the best place to add the explanation is in chapter 8 when Keven is explaining it to his cousin Eve. So, to help members of the AD/CW forum, I've included an excerpt from chapter 8 that explains block scheduling the way it's used in the local high school district here in Walnut Creek, California. There are many other types of block scheduling that are different; sometimes wildly different and very complicated. https://www.codeysworld.com/colinian/life-can-be-lonely/life-can-be-lonely-block-schedule.php Colin

  9. Cats are able to identify bullies and point them out to their owners. And sometime take action, too. See Pedro's Joseph's Cat for an example. Colin
  10. I wonder if the boys had a clue before their folks headed off to the concert. They certainly must have noticed when they took the first sip, though! Colin

  14. 🤣 That's one of the reasons why we don't have a cat. Or a dog. There's another option to give the pill to your cat. It will be somewhat more expensive, but it will not require that you schedule a visit to the emergency care department at your local hospital: 1. Take the cat to the animal hospital, making sure to bring the cat's pills with you. 2. Leave the cat with the veterinarian with instructions that he or she should give the cat it's pill after you've left. 3. Avoid gasping when you're told how much it is going to cost. 4. Leave the animal hospital and return home. 5. Do not return to the animal hospital to pick up your cat for at least one week, or whatever amount of time is necessary to insure that the cat will have forgotten that you're the one who brought it to the animal hospital. 6. At this point you are allowed to gasp when you're told how much this is costing you. 7. Pay by credit card; you probably don't carry that much cash with you. Colin
  15. Come on, Cole! You know that you love to read your own cliffhangers. It's other writers' cliffhangers you're not much into reading. Colin
  16. This was written in a way to catch our attention — the crude language really works here. It's worth following @ChuckWendig on Twitter.

  19. While the video can't be refuted, it's Ealington High School that has to decide what to do about their coach. Whatever they do is controlled by the contract he has with the school. And: 1. David Wells, the Edison High School staff attorney, will respond to Coach Poulter's letter. 2. Football Coach Reynolds and Athletic Director Lowry of Edison High School have cancelled the football games between Edison and Ealington that had been scheduled for the next 3 years (not including the 2018 season). Now Ealington has to scramble for an opponent. Other schools, having heard about what Ealington's player and coach did to Tom Harris might be reluctant to schedule games with Ealington. 3. Edison High School has added football games with Tassajara High School in Dublin, California to their schedule for the next 3 years. (Note: All schools are invented and probably don't exist) Colin

  23. Definitely 🤣 and as well. Colin
  24. I've never felt a need to bond with or congregate with a (note: not the) "gay community." Doug and I have a lot of friends. My guess is they are 80% to 90% straight. And I am counting the "lesbians" (who self-describe as gay) and my brother and his boyfriend in the non-straight side of the percentages. I'm not denigrating those who want to so bond or congregate; it's just that we and our gay friends don't. Colin
