Stories to Read During the Hiatus

Recommended Posts

As we await Mike's return on May 1, I thought I would post a handful of suggestions of stories that I particularly like and re-read from time to time.

On the High Plains of Wyoming, by Cole Parker.  This rather long-ish short story is my favorite of all of Cole's stories, not only because of the pluck and resourcefulness of Mason, the main character, but also the lessons embedded in it.

First Year, by Cole Parker.  This short novel shows the remarkable journey of main character Luke, who clearly surprises even himself with unknown pluck and resourcefulness.  The first chapter is kind of brutal but essential to the rest of the story.  Definitely one of those stories that we are sorry to see reach an end.

Ren, by Cole Parker.  This story seems to have stayed under the radar here at AD but it's an excellent one, and again demonstrates pluck and resourcefulness in the eponymous main character.

Exothermic Reaction, by Gee Whillickers.  This is a poignant story that reaches a powerful conclusion.

No More Loneliness, by Alien Son.  A heartwarming short story about deafness and triumph.

Someday Out of the Blue, by Little Buddha TW.  Connor's odyssey.

I'm sure others have suggestions as well -- just thought I'd offer these for what they may be worth.

I am taking up R's challenge and combining threads...

These stories are reminiscent (to me) of the vintage photographs in the video posted by Nigel Gordon.

I agree wholeheartedly with the suggestions so far.

Don't forget 'Please Come With Me' by Douglas. Or 'China Boat'

....actually any story by Douglas.

'Please Come With Me' is truly terrifying, but a must read if you like dystopian fiction. 😱
