Yes, but we did.  Today's "safety at all costs" mentality, abetted by the constant drone of "tragedy TV" on cable news channels, has taken something away.  I walked to school in first grade in an urban part of Los Angeles, accompanying my brother who was in kindergarten.  It was at least a mile.  Not a big deal back in the late 50s but unthinkable now.
