Camy
Fifty Shades of Grey beats one million sales record.EL James's Fifty Shades of Grey has become the fastest adult paperback novel to sell one million print copies. The first in the erotic trilogy passed the million mark in 11 weeks, smashing the previous record of 36 weeks set by Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. The book also broke the weekly record for paperback sales, selling 397,889 copies, according to Nielsen Bookscan. It beat JK Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which sold 367,625 copies in 2008. Sequels Fifty Shades Darker sold 245,801, and Fifty Shades Freed sold 212,832 across last week, with the entire series outselling the rest of the top 50 by about two to one. Fifty Shades of Grey is currently the 32nd bestselling book since records began in 1998. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-18618648 I had no idea BDSM was so popular. Personally, being flogged at school never appealed. I haven't read the book - or either of the sequels - but I'm tempted, just to see why it's taken off the way it has. It must be something to do with the prevalence of social media, or a twitter meme, or maybe it's just the times we live in... or something James's put in the water, or??? Anyone else read it? Madrigal
I think part of its charm is the fact that it's fanfiction...Twilight fanfiction. The names are changed and there are no vampires, but the concept is the same (or so I've heard). One of my friends owns a copy. I read the first page and it sounded very much like Twilight-- the main character's self description is the same anyway. Quote Link to comment

EleCivil
I know, right! As an Audible member myself, I'd download it. Also, the excerpts being read sound like a low- to mid-level Nifty story. And it's sold a million copies. That should give all AD authors hope - they're a hell of a lot better than this! Quote Link to comment
Cole Parker
I don't want to write down to that level. Still... a million copies, huh? C Quote Link to comment
Paul_and_Paco
What? Money before art? Capitalist pig dogs... (Not a Twilight fan.) Quote Link to comment
EleCivil
What? Money before art? Capitalist pig dogs... Prose-titute: (n) An author who writes about sexual activities in exchange for money. He hired a prose-titute to entertain him with stories filled with carnal depravity. And adverbs. Lots and lots of adverbs. Quote Link to comment
Chris James
The Dude should take note...maybe we could get Lugnutz or Des to read aloud and post it on AwesomeDude radio. But it would take a story the likes of which I have not seen here...thank goodness. Fifty Shades of Gray does seem to come across as prose-titution in that short video clip...doubt if I will ever read it. Quote Link to comment
Lugnutz
Public speaking?!? Quote Link to comment
The Pecman
Damn! I should've written a different version: "Fifty Shades of Gay"! Quote Link to comment
