Gee Whillickers
Yup. Poutine is a very popular Canadian dish. Fries, gravy, and cheese curds (not melted cheese, not grated cheese. Cheese curds only, please. They need to squeak when you chew them.) Fast food places everywhere have poutine, though usually the version they offer is horrible. Real poutine made properly is absolutely incredible. Not to mention extremely unhealthy. Plain old fries and gravy is also very, very popular. As it should be. Best with vinegar poured on top. Yum!!! colinian
Poutine is one of the few culinary wonders of the world that can be improved by adding a few large spoonfuls of Vegemite. Colin Link to comment

Cole Parker
That makes two of us! I can't imagine mixing gravy and vinegar, but have eating fries with just salt and vinegar for years. C Link to comment

Cole Parker
Wouldn't the malt vinegar run into the mushy peas? C Link to comment
Cole Parker
I've never seen anything called 'non-brewed condiment' on the store shelves here. And while we have grocery stores specializing in Italian and Mexican and Chinese ingredients, I've never seen one that caters to the English. C Link to comment
Merkin
I'm trying to envision what the inventory would consist in, besides cans of peas and bottles of non-brew. Perhaps Spotted Dick? Link to comment
Trab
Lovely 'short' story indeed. Being lactose intolerant (only in the sense that I react to it badly, not that I don't indulge myself) I try to stay away from poutine as I can't make it myself and can't risk it away from home; but gravy on fries (chips for you Aussies and Brits) is wonderful at worst, right up to sheer bliss.
