  1. Oh yes -- Obama was smiling as he made his list and checking it twice as Mitt was talking. I have one screen shot of Obama smiling as he added an item to his list as Mitt raged on. Mitt was writing Obama's ads for the next 5 weeks - one word at a time.

Obama was like a 'fat cat' sitting waiting for the rat to spring the trap...and Mitt willing talked on.

Thats my take on the debate...cunning like a cat! Go OBAMA!

  2. Wow! I was going to stay up and watch it, but fell asleep instead. Considering how many missions have crashed trying to reach Mars, and considering the size of the rover, I think this comes a very close second to walking 0n the Moon.

This video - a NASA animation of the landing - shows what went on. I don't think I'd have invested is such an 'out there' concept, but it's utterly brilliant that it worked.

Crash landings?? I don't remember failed landings on Mars in the past. Really??

  3. Am I an asshole? Well, don't answer that. But...

Both my niece and my nephew have become parents to two beautiful, precious little baby girls over the last half year and I couldn't be happier (well, I could be if they were boys, but I accept what fate puts before me). However...

At a family gathering last week, little Aubrey and Tinley had bizarre black ribbons around their heads, both had gaudy fingernail polish, and both had pierced ears. I thought it was... unseemly, a little extreme, somewhat tasteless... All right, I thought they were being prepared for a life as pole dancers and that I should stick a dollar in their ribbons.

Apparently I pissed some people off when I remarked, "Well, I hope you'll wait until they're at least out of Kindergarten before you tattoo them."

All right, my smart mouth could have been engaged AFTER I thought this through rather than before, but am I being unreasonable? Isn't six months just a little young for piercings and nail polish? With all the prostitots on Disney getting into trouble before they get their drivers licenses, shouldn't we let kids have some time to be kids before we start encouraging them to emulate Gaga? How about a few years of innocence?

Perhaps, it's a little ironic coming from one who writes stories about panting and grunting twelve year-old boys, but...

    Thoughts?

Good Lord!! I truly chocked on my Merlot!

You did good in your response Free Thinker. I myself have been thinking much the same with my nephews young girls. They're going to be going through puburity before they're in third grade. My mother must be going bonkers in her casket.

I don't have a clue what the answer might be~~~~

  4. I have been avoiding the news in general, but I'd seen headlines about Trayvon Martin. Then, a friend's post at another forum got me to respond.

She was angry, rightly so, about the Trayvon Martin case. But she had seen a photo that brightened her day a lot. It was a black and white photo of several boys, many sizes and ethnicities, all wearing hoodies, titled, "All our sons wear hoodies," with the obvious outrage of many mothers that a teenage boy, someone's son much like their son, could be killed on such a flimsy claim. Because it could have been their son.

After reading this and wiping the tears from my eyes, I must commend you for your beautiful and thoughtful comments. I can not agree with more!

I was struck in the same way by this mindless intervention into Trayvon's life. My heart goes out to Trayvon and his family and can only hope that Zimmerman is held acountable for his nefarious hatred.

  5. This is an interesting approach to law enforcement. I find I have mixed emotions falling on both sides of the fence. I imagine others will also view this with mixed emotions.

The internet has produced an entirely new dimension to our daily lives - both good and bad and in an accelerated fashion like never before.

Why would law enforcement not be looking at intelligence gathering too? I understand the privacy issue and take a deep breath! On the other side, based on the info in the article there definitely is a major positive on the enforcement side too.

I would hope that everybody is aware of the fact that putting ANY information on the web opens you and your thoughts to public viewing. That is a risk you take in offering information to the web/world. Why shouldn't this also work for intelligence gathering by 'Big Brother'? The benefits are huge based on the arrests mentioned in the article. Why wouldn't I approve of their information gathering – in the end it makes me safer! Right?

On the other side of the fence I can only think that the butt heads that placed this information on the internet did so knowing full well that it wasn't safe doing so – or, at least, should have been aware (smart enough) to NOT do it.

After all, alls fair in love and war.

  6. I came across that on a client's machine and took the best part of a day to get rid of it. Tried a lot of techniques that didn't work, eventually made a rescue disk from the AVG website and booted the machiine with it. It uses Linux to scan the hard drive, thus ensuring no Windows viruses can be running and defeating the scan. That worked. Malware is becoming cleverer and harder to defeat, which requires that anti-virus software et al is cleverer in turn, which, I suspect, results in slower system performance because the AV resident shield is holding up every disk and memory operation while it checks it. Makes me want to go back to Linux...

I agree with he Linux thinking. I switched 3 years ago and am ever so thankful. I love it!

  7. These people are dangerous and are not followers of the true Christian ethic. We need to keep watch on their insidious agenda's and political aspirations. We must strive to stop them at every turn and never let them achieve any level of political power. If we do we will all be doomed.

    Rick

You are so right Rick. The right wing is pushing this country to the 'gates of hell'.

Just last night on MSNBC they were talking about a lobby group (name didn't register with me, then or now)

that was organised in 1974 and has about 400 members -- company's and company CEO's in the top 1% and are supplying the new republican governors and state legislators with ready made bills such as what we are seeing spreading across these United States.

They have been operating under the cloak of darkness since 1974 -- doing their evil manipulation while we are sound asleep. Me thinks they should have turned their fan off last November, because the shit sure hit it this spring!

    Way to go Republicans~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~!

I'm sure we will be hearing more about this group in the near future. Move along, nothing to see here.

Sure dude -- American's are watching and they are way more than pissed!

  8. My God Cole -- I simply could not believe what the 3 year old was doing, and also the clip of him playing the violin!! Amazing is an understatement!!!

On top of that, there is no way that this kid was faking it either!!

This kid is a flat out GENIUS !!!

  9. Thanks for all of your kind comments everybody. You're gonna give me an inflated head.

I'm glad that you liked it. It was a fun story to write, a bit out there, a bit over the top (doomed!), and a bit of a challenge to try and make all the quantum physics stuff work out right with my layman's knowledge of it.

As for a sequel, well, I'm not too sure about that yet. I've had quite a few emails suggesting as much already, but I have one or two other things I'd like to finish up, so we'll see.

If I were to write a sequel though, Craig tells me it would start something like this:

I got to chapter 15 last night and had to get some sleep - grudgingly went to bed.

I got to this point reading the forum posts and had to stop -- didn't want to get into a spoiler situation.

Gee W. ~~ This has been a flatout awesome read to this point!!!!!!! I want a sequel too. I have read some awesome stories on the web, but this one so far is in the top 5 out of a 1000 or more.

    Awesome, just awesome dude!

  10. How can he not be in trouble?

    From the Daily: Undisguised bigotry

    By: The Michigan Daily

    Published September 15th, 2010

Often, it?s best to turn the other cheek in the face of hateful ignorance. But when hate speech is extreme and public, it must be confronted. Andrew Shirvell, a University alum and a current assistant attorney general for the state of Michigan, has taken aim at the Michigan Student Assembly President Chris Armstrong almost exclusively because Armstrong is MSA?s first openly gay president. Shirvell?s undisguised hatred for members of the LGBT community has compromised his ability to serve as a public official. Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox shouldn?t be comfortable employing someone who?s bigotry so clearly has the potential to influence the work he does on behalf of Michigan taxpayers. Cox must take decisive action to respond to Shirvell?s hate speech ? and his pro forma slap on the wrist this week isn?t going to cut it.

Shortly after the MSA election in March, Shirvell launched a campaign against Armstrong. Shirvell started his blog, ?Chris Armstrong Watch,? in late April. The blog has railed against what Shirvell calls Armstrong?s ?radical homosexual agenda,? as he put it in his initial Aug. 29 post. The first blog post also contained a photo of Armstrong with ?Resign? written over his face and a rainbow flag with a swastika in the middle of it next to him. Subsequent posts have labeled Armstrong a liar, an elitist, a racist, a pervert and a ?viciously militant homosexual activist.? Over time, the attacks have expanded to include several MSA members who work closely with Armstrong. Recently, Shirvell has taken to showing up at events at which Armstrong is present.

Though much of Shirvell?s tirades are one step from utter nonsense, his disdain for the LGBT community is obvious. Shirvell criticizes the LGBT community?s push for social equality in blanket statements that are plainly offensive to everyone. Though offensive, however, Shirvell?s hateful remarks aren?t a threat to campus. The University community recognizes Shirvell?s attacks as what they really are: the rants of a bigot.

Attorney General Mike Cox has not reacted appropriately to this reality. As reported on Tuesday, the attorney general?s office confirmed to the Daily that the office was aware of Shirvell?s blog. Yesterday, the Detroit Free Press reported that Cox had ?chastised? Shirvell for the statements made on the blog. According to a statement from Cox, Shirvell is entitled to ?a right to free speech outside working hours ? But Mr. Shirvell?s immaturity and lack of judgment outside the office are clear.?

Shirvell?s increasingly extreme actions of discrimination aren?t the result of a lapse in judgment. His behavior does not stem from immaturity. It stems from hatred. And this type of hatred makes Shirvell unsuitable to remain a government official. It will affect his ability to objectively interpret laws ? which is the job of the attorney general?s office. It?s unacceptable that Cox hasn?t dismissed a member of his staff who is so blatantly bigoted. A finger-wagging won?t change the fact that Cox has a responsibility to employ a thoughtful staff that will fairly carry out their jobs on behalf of the citizens of this state. Shirvell doesn?t fit this mold.

Cox shouldn?t tolerate such offensive behavior from someone who is required to fairly defend the law. A scolding isn?t an acceptable response to the hatred that continues to be published on Shirvell?s blog. Cox must take serious action. He should remove Shirvell from his position in the attorney general?s office.

  11. Thank you all, but extra special thanks to Eddy (Mountain Dude)!

I'm now the proud owner of a WiFi enabled Ubuntu netbook!

    Camy the happy.

PS It doesn't end here. I'll be bleating and yammering on about Ubuntu for a good while yet. :icon_geek:

Thank you Camy. I am beyond delighted that we got this working and that I could help you in doing so. I have had my own problems with networking too, but the Ubuntu (Linux) community has always been there, ready to help. You don't get that with Microsoft.

I have been using the Ubuntu software for two years now and do love it's OS interface. I hope you have an enjoyable experience with Ubuntu also.

You may always rely on me if the occasion requires assistance. Just ask, I'm here.
