U.S. government is illiterate in foreign languages

This current deficit in foreign language speaking government employees should not be a surprise, its just part of the paranoia and ignorance following 9/11:

Of course those of you who look back even further can remember when foreign language experts were dismissed from the military by the dozens because they were gay. It was all happening at a critical moment when U.S. troops were pushed into the Middle East and the Arab speaking translators were being fired.

The upshot of that vacuum was that the military hired local Arabs to translate for them and those guys screwed us up for years. I think we can all agree that the words military and intelligence cannot be used in the same sentence.
