  1. It's probably safest to never download or update a program from an email notification. The links provided are usually to a fake site.

Always go to the programs own web site or other trusted site like cnet (there are others, but that's where I start). You are less likely to get infected programs from these locations.

  2. The investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department appears to be shutting down websites that facilitate copyright infringement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seized dozens of domain names over the past few days, according to TorrentFreak.

I'm not sure what copyright infringement has to do with homeland security.

  3. Scientists have designed a bacteria that binds together cracks in concrete:

The genetically modified microbe has been programmed to swim down fine cracks in concrete and once at the bottom it produces a mixture of calcium carbonate and a bacterial glue. This glue combines with the filamentous bacterial cells, ultimately hardening to the same strength as the surrounding concrete and essentially "knitting" the building back together.

  4. On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved a bill that would give the Attorney General the right to shut down websites with a court order if copyright infringement is deemed ?central to the activity? of the site ? regardless if the website has actually committed a crime. The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) is among the most draconian laws ever considered to combat digital piracy, and contains what some have called the ?nuclear option,? which would essentially allow the Attorney General to turn suspected websites ?off.?

  5. After a four year legal battle, New York District Judge Kimba Wood issued a permanent injunction which orders the service to stop supplying its software and to block the sharing of all unauthorized files. The 17-page ruling requires LimeWire to "disable the searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality, and/or all functionality of the software."

  6. you left out most of his opening lines:

We must stop pandering to the pornographers and the perverts who seek to target our children and destroy their lives. I didn?t march in the gay parade this year, the Gay Pride parade this year. My opponent did. And that?s not the example we should be showing our children, and certainly not in our schools.

And don?t misquote me as wanting to hurt homosexual people in any way. That would be a dastardly lie. My approach is live and let live. I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful in getting married and raising a family. And I don?t want them to be brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid or successful option. It isn?t.

Do people really say "dastardly" anymore?

A couple of quotes from the N.Y. Daily News and the N.Y. Post (so consider the source)

Carl Paladino's openly gay nephew -- whom the candidate points to as proof he's no homophobe -- said yesterday he was "very offended" by his uncle's anti-gay rants.

Jeff Hannon, 23, a staffer for the Paladino campaign, also hasn't shown up at work since the bomb-throwing GOP gubernatorial hopeful made his caustic comments about homosexuality, one of Hannon's co-workers told The Post.

    About the gay club

Carl Paladino jumped to his son's defense on Wednesday, denying his son drove out homosexual employees when switching a Buffalo nightclub from gay to straight.

Paladino reacted to a story in Wednesday's Daily News that said William Paladino ran Cobalt, a gay bar that later became Tantra, a straight bar.

A former Cobalt bartender told The News that of the 10 bartenders there, only the three straight ones were kept on when the switch occurred.

  7. At least under Windows, the details are explained at this link:

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/profiles

Under Mac OSX, the bookmarks are stored in these directories:

    ~/Library/Mozilla/

    ~/Library/Application Support/

I like Firefox, but I'm still a Safari guy, and occasionally fall back on Chrome as a 3rd choice. And I also think Firefox is the best choice for Windows, with IE8 (and soon IE9) as a second choice.

Checked the first directory and it had by bookmarks...from 2008. So I have something, just not a current list (it has to be somewhere)

  8. Black Voices reports that Bishop Eddie Long, the virulently anti-gay megachurch pastor who has been accused of improper sexual conduct with three male youth group members, may step down as pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church following his sermon on Sunday.

This comes amid rumors that as many as thirty other young men have contacted attorney B.J. Bernstein about filing lawsuits against Long or joining existing lawsuits.

  9. A federal judge on Thursday declared the U.S. military's ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional and said she will issue an order to stop the government from enforcing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy nationwide.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips said the ban violates the First and Fifth Amendment rights of gays and lesbians. "Don't ask, don't tell" prohibits the military from asking about the sexual orientation of service members but requires discharge of those who acknowledge being gay or are discovered engaging in homosexual activity, even in the privacy of their own homes off base.

In her ruling, Phillips said the policy doesn't help military readiness and instead has a "direct and deleterious effect" on the armed services.

  10. Yesterday the California state assembly approved SB 906, which will make the following changes to California?s marriage law:

    300. (a) Marriage Civil marriage is a personal relation arising out of a civil contract between a man and a woman, established pursuant to a State of California marriage license issued by the county clerk, to which the consent of the parties capable of making that contract is necessary. Consent alone does not constitute civil marriage. Consent must be followed by the issuance of a license and solemnization as authorized by this division, except as provided by Section 425 and Part 4 (commencing with Section 500).
    400. Marriage Civil marriage may be solemnized by any of the following who is of the age of 18 years or older: (a) A priest, minister, rabbi, or authorized person of any religious denomination. No person authorized by this subdivision, or his or her religious denomination, shall be required to solemnize a marriage that is contrary to the tenets of his, her, or its faith. Any refusal to solemnize a marriage under this subdivision shall not affect the tax exempt status of any entity.

  11. Ninth Circuit stays Perry ruling

Appellants? motion for a stay of the district court?s order of August 4, 2010 pending appeal is GRANTED. The court sua sponte orders that this appeal be expedited pursuant to Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure 2. The provisions of Ninth Circuit Rule 31-2.2(a) (pertaining to grants of time extensions) shall not apply to this appeal. The previously established briefing schedule is vacated. The opening brief is now due September 17, 2010. The answering brief is due October 18, 2010. The reply brief is due November 1, 2010. See Arizonans For Official English v. Arizona, 520 U.S. 43, 66 (1997).

    IT IS SO ORDERED.

  12. This means the liklihood of a legitimate appeal being filed is slim, and the liklihood strong that the judge's decision to permit gay marriages will stand and be enacted next week.

no appeal also means no supreme court, which means this decision will only apply to California....for now

  13. Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto's "1945-1998" is an animated map showing the 2,053 nuclear explosions that took place around the world during the 20th century, from the detonations at Alamogordo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 to the tests conducted by India and Pakistan in 1998.

  14. It must be boycott season, cuz the American Family Association has named their latest target. This year the featured business will be Home Depot.

Home Depot, the lumber/hardware mega-store, refused to acquiesce to AFA?s demands that they ban all employees from participating in gay pride:
