And since everyone is weighing in, I suppose I should add my guilded copper's worth. As I watched the final moments of the film, like everyone else, I saw the little boys jump into the lake and made the obvious connection...the boyfriend jumped. But then we flashed back to the cliff, not quite having made that decision yet and we panned out to the mighty ocean and the implied message that there was still so much of life to live for. I choose to refrain from deciding one way or the other. I prefer to believe the ending was meant to be completely ambiguous, sending us the message that even at the brink of desperation and hopelessness, there is hope. Yes, some will jump, but others will turn away and choose to embrace the vast possibilities that wide open ocean implies. Even in hopelessness, there can be that glimmer of hope. Some will choose to embrace that small glimmer, others will not. And one final note. You know, it really doesn't matter if he jumped or not, the series of movies were meant to get people thinking and talking. Seems to be working.

First, I'd like to make a note that I NEVER indicated this was an 'urgent' posting. I posted this as a means to open a dialogue on the subject. Seems to have worked. Got your attention. So let us discuss the subject of gun control instead of criticizing me for how I started the conversation.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent, Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent, Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the state of Victoria.....alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. (Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!) Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note Americans, before it's too late! We all know, of course, that reports like this will have no effect on the actions of our legislators. They are, by in large, unable to learn from the mistakes of others. They are much more concerned about the monumental problems of gays marrying, women's abortion rights (or lack thereof), ensuring that big banks, auto companies, and other mega corporations are properly subsidized with federal funds that should be going to social security, eleviating homelessness, etc. Okay, enough rant. Looking forward to the increase in reports of armed criminal activities here.

Say James, what a good story. I'm sort of a science geek, I suppose. At least I enjoy reading what authors speculate about in their fiction. I have to say that I've heard the theory before, but I liked the way your presented it to us. Very entertaining. And yes, it'll make ya think a bit. But gads, do we have to dissect it so minutely? I appreciated that you used frequencies that were well outside the range to trigger the effect. I mean, isn't that what any good author would do with such a potentially dangerous scientific principle? At least two of your fans (and now 3) gave you a comment or two about the merits of a fine work of 'fiction'. I do tire, however, of all the 'education flaunting', especially for such a short work of fiction. Well done, James, on a fine little story.

Just saw this post and thought it humorous and thought provoking. I said: it's sad they thought that kid had a bomb. She said: they didn't think he had a bomb. Or perhaps, just maybe, the teacher could have questioned Ahmed more closely and had him explain what he'd made and why. I ask myself what would have happened if this had been another student who was not a muslim. I've heard nothing in all the coverage that indicated Ahmed has been a vocal or reactionary Muslim. So why the hell assume threat. People who react in fear so easily are a threat themselves, in my opinion. I sure hope that the boy can find a school with more forward thinking people in it. At this rate, all our public schools are going to be resorting to strip searches of their students as they enter the building for the day.

Yes, she needs to sue, as the article suggested at the end. But even more important is to get the judge who ordered this atrocity fired and disbarred. These 'christians' are doing themselves no favors with these actions.

All of this is very true. But I must point out that the self-published novel is, even after being packaged very creatively in most cases, still only a collection of bound pages, left to languish in obscurity if the author doesn't have the financial means to promote his/her work. I know this to be fact, because my self-published book has languished for three years on the shelves of Amazon. I was just able to muster the funds to accomplish a very simple publishing package. I'm sure that if I'd had the financial where-with-all, I could have gotten a professional cover done, which might have increased the visual appeal somewhat. Unfortunately, book promotion is, by and large, an expensive undertaking, especially when you have no liquid assets that you can turn to anything other than food, insurance, and gas. My story of Haywood's Journey collects a lot of dust on those Amazon shelves, selling only one eBook version every couple of months. Not much of a supplimentary income, I must say. LOL. I do not, for one moment, regret the effort in self-publishing. Yes, it's a vanity thing to some degree. But it would be very nice if it could also be a financial thing as well. The funny thing is that I make as much royalty from the sale of an inexpensive eBook version as I would from the sale of the paperback....LOL....go figure. Frankly, that's the only real advantage I see to traditional publishing, the promotion. Otherwise, if the author is dedicated enough to find good people to help with the editing, willing to be honest in their assessment, the result of a self-published book can be top quality. For instance, I recently read the self-published memoir of a journalist, a man who'd lived through WWII and all those subsequent conflicts. I found it a fascinating read, and I typically don't care for memoirs, biographies, and autobiographies. My point, though, is that because the author was able to turn a phrase and maintain a sense of continuity...and because he had available to him a good editor, in the form of a relative with enough interest in the project to see it done well, what was turned out was quality material that most, unfortunately, will never see.

Okay, I'll admit it up front: I'm a small minded, vindictive sort. I'd love to see her not only get ousted soon, but very, very publicly. It's just a shame we'll probably never hear what sort of employment she tries for afterward, and what the response from those potential employers is.
