  1. Seriously, I do think this is quite a worthy follow-on to "Alec's Best Friend" and it wouldn't hurt for a reader to have tackled that one ahead of this one. Nor would it hurt to be familiar with Ryan Bartlett's recent stories that introduced other key characters.

  2. I don't know about anyone else, but the little I have learned about the actual content of the movie "The Interview" has made it clear to me that I would not have been interested in seeing it. I can only take Seth Rogen in small, widely spaced doses. I suspect this movie would probably have come out and done very modest business, then disappeared from view soon after.

As a result of the hacking, however, we now have a brilliant demonstration of the "Streisand Effect," where efforts to suppress something backfire by bringing far more attention to the item than it would originally have garnered. And North Korea is now front and center as an object of international opprobrium.

  3. Possible but unlikely spoilers below.

I'm a bit confused by Adam's reaction to the statement that is quoted to him at the very end of this chapter. While I guess I can see the basis for what he does, insofar as it involves the other two people in question, it seems to me that another far more direct response would have been more plausible and appropriate insofar as the statement involves the future of Adam personally.

Unfortunately I don't know how to phrase this more clearly without crossing the spoiler line.

    Am I missing something?

  4. This forum automatically switches to a mobile-friendly format when accessed by a smartphone. (I have accessed it both through an iPhone and through a Blackberry.) The mobile version is quite functional and definitely easy to work with on a small screen.

However, the default appearance of the mobile version is a white background, not the dark gray used on the full version of the site. There is no problem as long as posters leave their posts in the default text color of the full site -- the mobile version presents this as dark text against a white background.

However, if the poster gets fancy and changes the default text color to something that looks nifty against the charcoal gray background -- such as light blue, or yellow, or (worst of all) white -- the mobile version faithfully carries over the text color change, making the post nearly unreadable or, in the case of white text, completely invisible.

My question therefore is whether it is possible, in the forum software settings, to suppress the text color changes (in the mobile version only) so that posts with altered text color can be read on a mobile device?

  5. This tale and the sequel are vastly entertaining and intricately woven -- there are many names and details to keep track of.

For maximum effect it helps to have read "Aladdin's Awakening" first, although it is not a requirement. AA sets up a number of background items that reappear in MMaSM that makes those items more poignant. But it's a lot of reading to tackle.

I'm glad to see this pair of stories in the "Picks from the Past" box.

  6. I was pleased to see this charming short story highlighted as a "Pick from the Past," and surprised that (as far as my searching revealed) there was never a thread started for the story.

I wasn't sure at first whether it was an authentic Cole Parker piece because it's not set in Comic Sans. ?

It's a charming and fairly archetypal story of its genre, and of course readers are left wanting more.

    Good show.
