Flipping the Coin by Alan Dwight

I confess I almost quit reading this story a short way in because the main character seemed to have no redeeming qualities. I’m glad I persisted. 

Roshan deserves an enormous amount of credit for bringing Mitch out of his shell. I was surprised by their college decisions, and given those, not surprised by the outcome. It’s an achievement to cover so many years in only 12 chapters.
