I think they wanted to get away from attaching a year to the name (to avoid dating it), and didn't want a unique word like "Vista," because it has some bad connotations.

Note some wags are pointing out that this is not really the 7th incarnation of Windows, depending on how you count them.

Apple is no better at coming up with spiffy names. They're running out of wild cats to name their OS (Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Tiger, Panther, Leopard, Snow Leopard?)...

After 'Snow Leopard' comes 'Puddy Tat', then 'Meowl' which is a segue to their next set of operating systems to be named after birds.
