  1. New short story from the author of Bonding Energy, Opportunity Cost, and Solitary Night.

No need to summarize it here, because it won't take you long to read it. And you should read it, because it's really good.

It's told almost entirely in dialogue - no descriptions of how the characters look, what they're wearing, what the room looks like - no surface detail. It works perfectly, considering what the story is about - the effect of issues that are completely under the surface.

  2. Fries are those scrawny things that the burger chains use and the heathen's from across the English channel. They are often processed too; made into pulp and forced through a sieve-like thing ending up as long thin strands and cut to a uniform length once set. God only know's what you are getting with this sort of crap.

I'm with ya. Not a fan of deep-fried potato mush. Can't improve on nature, man - just cut 'em up and bake 'em, skins included, no need for oil/lard/goo. As for sauces, either soy sauce or cayenne hot sauce.

  3. I used to use a generic juggling .gif, but now I use Ness from EarthBound, doing his famous "fuzzy pickles" pose. EarthBound was the first RPG I ever played, and I always appreciated its weird humor. Plus, anybody who can fight hippies and dinosaurs with a baseball bat is automatically awesome.

  4. I decided to do it this year. I know some people who did it last year, and they really wanted me to join in, but I chickened out at the last minute. This time, though, I'll give it a shot. And hey, if I don't make it to 50,000, I'll still have a really good jumping-off point for my next story.

  5. Thanks, everybody! :lipssealed: You guys are so awesome.

    I am now a Ele'unatic.

    :icon13:

I have had a hard time writing a good chapter to follow up the last one. It’s hard to go from a blatant cliffhanger to something that doesn’t drop the ball on the action or the plot. That, and I have lost the disk that has all my stuff on it. Sorry, but it could be a while.

Yeah, I know how that goes. No worries - take whatever time you need. I know I did.

  6. New chapter! Yeah!

Didn't see that coming at all. This is such a huge turning point...definitely an "end of disc one" kind of moment.

Awesome job at balancing the dark with the light, though. I was laughing through the first part and nail-biting through the end.

...Tactics was way better than VII, though. :lipssealed:

  7. I'd like to have an outline, I'd like to have a little card file with descriptions of all my characters, and the scenes all worked out, but I'm so disorganised it just never happens.

If you want to keep a character bible (which I highly recommend), do it now - it's a lot easier to start one when you're three chapters in than it is when you're ten chapters in, and have already dropped ten chapters' worth of subtle references to appearances, quirks, etc.

One of the worst things is when you're far along in a story and all of a sudden think "Wait - did I give this one a last name, yet? What about eye color, did I mention that? It wasn't important then, but now..." and have to pick through all your chapters looking for any passing reference that you might have made.

I like to keep a Word document open with all the characters, their appearances, likes/dislikes, relationship to other characters, even page/chapter references to important scenes - that way, I can make updates to it as I go. Helps so much when it comes to continuity.

  8. I don't agree on the Narnia comment. It's much better written and that comparison would put people off because Narnia is overtly religious and not subtle at any point on top of being a children's book through-and-through.

Actually, I agree - it's not a good comparison. It comes up a lot because of the author's often-publicized dislike of the Narnia series - he's written essays and done interviews where he's called the Narnia books "racist", "misogynistic", and "life-hating".

They share a lot of elements - talking animals, parallel worlds, girls hiding in wardrobes, themes about growing up and making moral choices...but they're completely different.

  9. I love these books. They aren't the typical "I-wish-I-was-Tolkien" fantasy books. I've heard it compared to Narnia a lot (specifically as "Narnia for atheists"), but it strays from the more traditional fantasy/fairy-tale elements that Narnia had.

I hope they do a good job with the movie. I heard rumors that they were going to cut out references to god/religion to make it more marketable in the US (since it doesn't exactly portray religion in a less-than-evil light).

The film's director is Chris Weitz, who was nominated for a screenplay Oscar for About a Boy in 2003.

This is encouraging, though, because About a Boy was a really good book-to-movie adaptation.

  10. Very cool. I'll second James's comment about the white space between paragraphs/speakers, but other than that, I love it. You got me interested in all these characters in a rather short time, which is awesome.

Coincidentally, I just got done reading a book where one of the female characters had a sexual attraction to Jesus/crucifiction fetish.

Anyway, once again, this is great.

  11. Music's definitely an inspiration for me.

I got the nerve to write L&L after spending hours every day walking through the woods, listening to the same album on repeat over and over again (Defiance Ohio - "Share What Ya Got").

I've got a 23-song playlist that I listen to while writing Laika that follows the mood and even certain events of the story pretty well. I actually put this together after plotting out the story, but hearing it always gets me in a writing mood. I'll post it if anybody's interested.

The story I've got planned next, once Laika's done, was inspired by walking around while listening to Rosa's album "I Mississippi You". Perfect walking around music.

  12. The following was posted on the website for the band "Bomb the Music Industry":

For a few years, I had been helping to get petitions signed for federal funding for the National Hopeline/1-800-SUICIDE with my old band The Arrogant Sons of Bitches. I always thought this was a great 'cause, especially in an era where people take on causes that might alienate a lot of people instead of open them up to new ideas or taking action.

It appears that our government has opted to cut their funding to 1-800-SUICIDE/The National Hopeline Network, with plans to create a NEW suicide hotline: one that is more "faith-based", has less lesbian/gay/bisexual/transender focus and, saddest, one where the calls will be monitored.

We have brought petitions, stickers, pamplets and literature to many of our shows in the past and many of you have signed them. Now however is when the organization needs you the most. I think I have to stress that EVERYONE CAN AGREE ON HAVING A SUICIDE HOTLINE SO PEOPLE DO NOT KILL THEMSELVES WHEN THEY HAVE PROBLEMS. Up until this decision, this hasn't been a Republican vs. Democrat issue. This isn't an AMERICAN issue. This is a HUMAN issue. So PLEASE take the time to visit save1800suicide.org. There's a few options of what you can do. The easiest thing is writing a letter to the government and let them know that we won't take this lying down. That takes like 30 seconds, so stop stalking strangers on myspace for a minute and make a difference. Thank you.

    --Jeff

P.S. I have recently started a donation-based record label called Quote Unquote Records. We have released an album by Bomb The Music Industry! and will also be releasing the much sought after ASOB Live Radiohead covers in the coming week (as well as a bunch of other cool releases). All the songs will be available for free download, and suggested donation. A portion of the money from the donations will be given to help save 1-800-SUICIDE. Or you could visit Save1800suicide.org and donate however much you wish straight to the source. Thanks a lot!

So, yeah. As of now, the hotline has 12 days left to get the money together to remain in business.

  13. The pleasures of masturbation

Make us groan and shout hip, hip hooray!

I've only shouted "Hip hip hooray" ONCE. Never again, after all those weirded-out looks from everybody else on that elevator.

Though, now that I think about it, maybe it wasn't the shouting that had them weirded out...

    Nah.

Heheh, good poem. Love the title, too.

  14. EleCivil was working on another writing project, and he'll be back with a new chapter ... sooner than later. ;)

Yep. That other project's done, by the way.

I went to ten hour long indie/twee-pop/cuddlecore/punk show the other day. One of the performers jumped off of the stage, ran into the crowd and hugged me. He had us all take our shoes off and throw them into a "shoe liberation pile" (exposing my mismatched socks), then layed down to start a random cuddle-pile in the middle of the dance floor. I juggled between sets for tips - I kept enough to buy an "I Love to Read" button from one of the Distro booths. After all of that, I'm really in the mood to write more of Laika, so expect the next chapter pretty soon.

  15. Steven King, giving advise about how to end a book? His last book didn't even have an ending! And, come on - this is the guy who put a page-long "You shouldn't read the end of this book, because it'll disappoint you" disclaimer before the last chapter of The Dark Tower.

Heheh...don't mind me. I love Steven King books, but can't stand the way he ends them.

Back on topic, though, I hope she doesn't kill off Harry.

  16. Dude, thank you. I really appreciate the effort you put into this site and this forum. I'm so glad you decided to keep the forums open. If there's anything I can do to help out, let me know - this site means a lot to me, and I'll do whatever it takes to keep it going strong.

    Thanks again.
