  1. Breaking other people's code is/can be fun. I run a web application development department and we are always, purposely, intent on breaking our applications with the objective to fix them. If we don't find the bugs, then our customers will. That's usually not a comfortable situation! I remember back when I took a coding class in high school the instructor said, "There's no program that has at least four lines of code that's entirely bug-free." That's especially true when you have at least 4,000 lines of code. Colin

  4. i before e except after c weird! In fact, according to this list on Wiktionary there are more than the 108 words they have listed that don't follow this rule. My personal favorite is zeitgeist. Colin
  5. Peter, No problema... I deleted the other two topics of the same name. There were no responses to either of them. Mike installed an update to the IPS forum software; it (through no fault of AD) can be a bit wonky. IPS seems to rely on administrative users to finish beta testing of releases. That's probably the only way to do it — IPS can't know every possible way their software is being used. This is complex code! Colin

  7. I agree with you, Graeme. I noticed that posting "schedule" and laughed. Colin
  8. Rodriguez was featured on '60 Minutes' (maybe a year ago?) and I thought it was hard to believe that his music was so popular outside of the US and not known here except among a few fans. His songs are amazing. Colin

  12. Mrs. Warring went to her physician. "Doctor Keefer, I have a problem. I've started passing gas and the fact that I'm doing that is worrisome. It's occurring quite often. Luckily, it passes silently and has almost no scent. Will I need gastrointestinal surgery to correct this problem?" "I'm afraid you will need gastrointestinal surgery, Mrs. Warring. However, that alone won't resolve your problem. You will also need surgery to fix your ears and your nose." Colin (Courtesy of my granddad)

  15. In the Guardian article there's a link to the BuzzFeed Style Guide. It's definitely worth a look; there's a lot of useful information, including extensive abbreviation and word lists. Thanks, FreeThinker, for posting this link. Colin
  16. I write primarily for Codey's World, and Codey's World is aimed more at the tween and teen gay audiences, and Codey's World has stories with sexual content but it's more often hinted at than actualized mise-en-scene, so it is not explicit or graphic. As a result, the object of my stories is definitely not the sex. It's more what leads to situations where there is, or will be, or might be sex going on, but it's left to the reader's imagination to supply those details. I also write stories that have no sexual and/or no gay themes, and those are also on Codey's World. Colin
  17. The Salvation Army and the LGBT Community Ho Ho Ho by Cole Parker tells about a time, not so long ago, when the Salvation Army was not a friend of the LGBT community. That has changed, and their website at http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/nodiscrimination/ states their current policies about supporting the LGBT individuals who go to the Salvation Army for support, as well as having supportive policies for hiring employees and accepting volunteers who are members of the LGBT community. This is a very different situation than they followed as recently as four years ago. I certainly hope these changes are permanent and, like the Boy Scouts, the Salvation Army has discovered that LGBT people are not to be demeaned and castigated as sinners. Doug and I went Christmas shopping in downtown Walnut Creek last weekend. There was a red kettle for donations near one of the entrances to Macy's. I grabbed Doug's hand and we walked up, and with my other hand I dropped two dollars into the slot. The Salvation Army person manning the kettle looked at us, smiled, and said, "Bless you, and have a very Merry Christmas." Colin

  20. Excellent. Fantastic. Some U.S. politicians should be required to read the entire statement. And yes, I'm thinking of Alabama. Colin

  23. As soon as Cynus let us know that the series was available on Amazon.com in a Kindle version, I ordered my copy. I'm glad I have it — it's a story that deserves going back and rereading. Colin
  24. When Doug and I decided to file as California Registered Domestic Partners we had to wait until I turned 18; Doug was already 18. His birthday is September 23rd, mine is November 21st — yes, that's today — wow, I just realized that was exactly 10 years ago today! We had our form filled out and a check for $33.00 (my check #14102) sealed in a stamped envelope and that morning of Wednesday, November 21, 2007 (the day before Thanksgiving) we went to the post office and sent the envelope by registered mail with a return receipt request. We got our Certificate of Registered Domestic Partnership back from Debra Bowen, Secretary of State of the State of California, dated Tuesday, November 27, 2007. After the United States Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, we got married on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, certified by the Deputy Commissioner of Civil Marriages of Contra Costa County, California. It probably seems like it's taking a long time to be approved in Australia, but it looks like it's about to happen. Congratulations to our Aussie friends! Colin
