I went to St. Mary School, a Catholic school, from K thru 5. When I was in the fifth grade we had catechism for an hour three mornings a week taught by a priest from the church. One day he went on a rant about God knows everything you do and everything you will do (a.k.a., predestination — I know now that this isn't Church teachings; let's return to my fifth grade classroom). I sat there and listened to his ranting about how we had to be good because God sees and knows all. So, not being a shy boy () I raised my hand and asked (more or less something like the following — it happened when I was 10 years old and I'm 27 now so I don't remember my exact words): "If God knows what we do and what we're going to do in the future, why to I have to try to be good? You said God already knows what I'm going to do, so it's all going to happen anyway no matter what I try to do, right?" The priest was not pleased, and used the unchangeable, "That's one of God's mysteries." That's when I decided that I would go to Walnut Creek Intermediate (the local middle school) starting in sixth grade. That's also when I decided I didn't need to go to church any longer. Colin

Thanks for that, Addym. I like ‘hen’ because I‘d like English to have gender-neutral pronouns in addition to the many gender-specific pronouns which we have already. We have ‘they’ but that's a plural pronoun and whenever I'd try to use it as a singular pronoun (since there's nothing else lying around that can be used) I'd get shot down by my teachers in middle and high school and my instructors in college. James, as anyone who cooks up chickens in a Chinese restaurant will tell you, the beak isn't sharp enough or thin enough to pick your teeth. What you use are the feet. There are three toes per foot, and a claw on each toe. That's six per chicken. Lots of teeth picking with that bunch! And if you're wondering about the spur claw on each foot, those are cut off by the chicken processors. They just get in the way. Colin

My aunt and cousin live in Alachua, Florida. It's about 20 miles north of Gainesville and/or 70 miles southwest of Jacksonville, sort of in the middle of the state east-to-west. They didn't have any flooding at their house, even though there was flooding in parts of Alachua. They didn't lose power, even though other parts of Alachua did. They were very lucky. Colin

I'd never heard of sepsis before reading this article. That a kid can die from a cut is really frightening and like Chris said, very sad! When I was in high school we always thought it was weird that no matter how small a cut or scrape we got in PE, we'd be sent to see the nurse. The only problem is the nurse could only give external medication. So if someone had a deep cut or a large scrape the nurse would call an ambulance and they'd be taken to the hospital. To us that always seemed stupid for two reasons: 1) "It's only a little cut!" but that didn't impress the nurse because it probably wasn't that little. 2) Kaiser Hospital was right across the street from my high school. Okay, across the street and a half a block north. Still, we could walk and be there faster than waiting for the ambulance to arrive at school. But, no way, we'd have to wait. After reading this article about what happened to this 12-year-old boy, I see why that was probably a good procedure for my high school to follow. Of course, in this boy's case the ER screwed up, too. Colin
