Islam is not alone in intolerance of homosexuality. Many Christian denominations have the same problem. It seems to me that the adherents of any religion that preaches that homosexuality is sin have to come to terms in advance with the possibility that a member of their family may turn out to be gay, and how they will deal with it should that happen. If they cannot work out how to deal with that eventuality, then surely they need to question their faith?
