  1. Hmm - there may be a couple of contenders, but I think I would put Driver in the number 1 position as well. Perhaps not as confrontationally as WBMS though. :-) I would rank his PLAN/Horse stories as his best though, IMHO. The characters of Evan! and Aaron are amazing. Yes, there is an exclamation point in the spelling of Evan, at least according to Aaron. :-)
  2. I agree with both of our esteemed members' posts. Foxwood is the best of FT's stories that I have read, and his others are quite good.
  3. ouch. but he is absorbent. FMA - Mon-Wed at 1am [part of adult swim]. It just restarted this past Tuesday, so you wouldn't be too far behind.
  4. Cartoon Network....which also broadcasts FMA (see sig) Clearly, cartoons/animation/anime are indicative of vast, intuitive cognative powers. However, they do not preclude a loose marble or two. Hmm, considering the original topic in this thread, I'm surprised a certain sponge hasn't been mentioned. lol
  5. Why not on a first date? What if ice cream cones were purchased? Nothing scary about ice cream cones normally.
  6. Yikes, I thought that was going to be an Ed, Edd & Eddie reference at first ! The link thou didst hintest at, oh Blue one, - from Deweywriter. http://www.venganza.org/
  7. or there is the phrase - open up a can of whoop-ass on you. Mostly a Southernism, I do believe. WBMS - if that is the LAST thing, then what is the first? Graeme - I actually like the Australian phrases - it adds a layer of linguistic deciphering which I enjoy. Granted, I could be considered odd for that reason (and others no doubt).
  8. Did you hear about that new pirate movie? Its rated "arrgh"
  9. I confess I noticed it, too, though I was not bothered by it a great deal. On a slight tangent - ever hear of a "Tom Swifty" - so called from the Tom Swift Jr. books by Victor Appleton II. This was a series of boys adventure books (no, not that kind of adventure) from Grosset & Dunlap who published Hardy Boys, Rick Brant, Nancy Drew etc. Most often, an adverb used to describe the manner in which a character spoke was related to the content of the speech. For example - I can't believe the engine is still smoking like that, said Tom exhaustedly.
  10. one way or another, Blue. :-) Does this count as a thread hijacking?
  11. WBMS - You should be ashamed of that pun ! lol Are you often not naked under your clothes? Or is it merely a matter of needing some repairs? (Your post would indicate a lack of hems.....) Blue - I don't know.
  12. WBMS - I agree with dude about the story, though I'm not faulting you for your hiatus from writing. (Note the hopeful element contained in hiatus.) However, I shall fault you for your grammar in your above post. "Who's to say who ends up with who." GASP ! Unless you mean that only "who" gets to determine with what person "who" will associate, then I think you meant "with whom," did you not? And is "What" still on second?
  13. Real Life? Sorry but could you explain, Graeme? I thought this was real ....... I confess I just read all 8 chapters one evening last week in one sitting, which should tell you how much I enjoyed it. New Brother is still my favorite of your stories, but its a close call. (Glad to see you're continuing NB !) {Just kidding about real life, Blue, Graeme is right - family first ! I'm getting ready to move back East for family reasons so my thoughts are with you}

    Ambush

Agreed ! Another fine story Graeme! I'll admit I didn't think it was a bashing story - just cause you're a bit too sneaky :D - but I didn't expect the brother to be gay.
  15. I wasn't one of the beta readers :) But I agree with Graeme and AJ !! Definitely a great read and fine addition to AD. I hope we see more of your work, dcorvus!!
  16. Agreed about the grandparents - I wonder if there are other issues involved? I hate to stereotype that part of the countr, but having grown up in that area, I would bet the kid's journal contained things that offended the grandparents' religious "sensibilities." Its a shame that the kid is 18, as that does toss him into the adult class for trial purposes. On the bail, the judge may have had no choice, as sometimes bail amounts are determned by the severity of the charge. I would bet that the bail range for that offense starts at $5,000. From the intial bail amount, I bet the judge thought the charges were very weak at best. Hopefully, the charges will go away, and the kid can move away from the grandparents!!
  17. Graeme - I think that WBMS has pretty much covered things, though of course, the requirements may be different in various countries. Even there, the various international conventions on intellectual property would tend to provide some consistency. However, I would stress that for there to be a violation of another's rights, you would have to be appearing to claim rights of authorship - in other words, making the quoted material appear to be yours. (I realize that you would not do such a thing!) By citing the origin of that material, you are not claiming ownership or any attempt to produce a derivative work. Obviously, citing tracts of others' written material is quite common in academic, scientific, and other non-fiction realms, and less so in works of fiction. In legal works, those citiation can be quite long at times. In fiction, I doubt that any quote is going to be excessively long or complete. I have seen some lyrics quoted that could be an entire song, but usually its a stanza or two and the refrain. Very doubtful that any uproar would occur from it, if the origin is cited. Keep in mind that it works to be a form of free promotion of the song. I cannot cite any hard evidence on this, but I believe that most fiction that gets yanked off the net is fanfic type work where the original creator of a fictional character or an actual celebrity object to a gay story involving them. Personally, I would think that the uproar would cause more attention than leaving things be. At worst, the offending quotation would have to be edited out, unless you have been writing fanfic? There, the whole story would go, simply because it infringes on the character used or allegedly damages the celebrity's reputation. (They usually do such a good job themselves!). Hope that helps - let me know if any questions. richard

    Questions

Trying to hijack the thread Graeme? I'd have to agree with Codey's observation based on having lived in LA for 15 years and now here in SF. Like any other trait or habit though, there is quite the spectrum of behavior. Also, I think the percentage of open relationships may be rather high when compared to straight ones. (No statistical info to support either assertion other than observation and anecdote.)
  19. Hey Jeff - welcome to AwesomeDude !!
  20. Now that I have recovered from the flurry of flashbacks to my Classical Lit degree and Latin classes ..... Blue I must quibble with yourexamplar, though not critically, as the rules you describe are correct! The term "to log on" is actually a verb - the infinitive form to be exact. "On" does not stand alone in that sentence and neither does "log." One might say there is an implied hyphen between the two words, thus forming a new word in some invisible, quasi-Germanic way. You are correct that English grammar relies heavily on Latin though the methods greatly differ. I bet you know these factoids, but in the intersts of digression and esoteric postings . . . In Latin, the function of a noun is shown via its form which included the preposition. Just as verbs change depending on usage ("conjugating" ), Latin noun forms change ("declensions") when their case changes (nominative, accusitive, etc. English leaves the noun alone (usually) and requires some other method to show the noun's function, such as word order or prepositions. Technically, one could almost arrange the words in a Latin sentence or clause in any order and not change the meaning. Using English's more cumbersome method, we must beware dangling, orphaning, or running on in English! [NOTE: No prepositions were harmed in the writing of this post. All the words cooperated freely in fact, however, they decline any responsibility for the overall post which remains the liability of the author.]
  21. I agree !!! I've read this story before, as well as I think two more with the same characters. (Or may be one story of which this is the first chapter) But, I cannot recall where I read them. So I am very glad Dude is hosting it and hope to see more soon ! Kudos to AJ for a creative story line! There aren't very many gay vampire heroes around !
  22. So, I thought I should explain my cryptic comment about the quote becoming popular lately. (Not to mention that it has been driving me nuts sinfe my last post as to why it was so recently familiar. PBS's recent broadcast of American Experience:RFK was the culprit. One segment in the rather well-done documentary, is entited "The Awful Grace of God." After JFK's death, RFK apparently found some degree of solace in reading Aeschlus and that quote was his favorite passage. He quoted it in a rather famous extemporaneous speech the night martin Luther King Jr was assasinated. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/rfk/peopleeve...ts/e_grief.html is the link for anyone interested.
  23. Wow I've been a fan of Aeschylus for some 20+ years now (my goodness time after college does go quickly - the ever-popular Classical Lit degree) and a fan of Grasshoppers for less than a year. I'm sending the link on to my college-mentor-now-friend as I imagine she will like not only the story, but the modern use of Aeschylus. I hope both their works are still being read 2000 years from now ! The basis of the story has gotten to be a popular quote lately !
  24. Thanks for the info Blue ! Good to be back - now if alll the boxes would finish unpacking themselves ! I think that would be a great invention - boxes that pack, move and unpack for you ! lol
  25. Yep, the long-winded guy from SoCal is back, and I know you've been anxiously waiting, too ! (Well, perhaps in the "Land of Not") :D Now in the Bay Area, but I'm going to be lazy and not change the profile name. Hope everyone is well. Looks like I have a LOT of reading to catch up on, so will get right toi it. BTW - is Dewey's forum down temporarily? Couldn't access it a bit ago. As I am using a new com, new DSL connect etc., I question my end (no jokes) first. (Plus a new wireless keyboard and mouse, so pardon any typing errors.) For the geeks amongst us, using the Gyration mouse which you can actually use in the air - no mousepad needed ! Richard
