I accidentally stumbled here into At The End of the String, by Simon Jimenez. Bar none, it is the finest short story I may have ever read. It's not your typical happy-go-lucky tale by any stretch of the imagination. But it is true beauty in prose.

The first time I read this story I knew what was coming after reading the sentence: “Come back,” I whispered, but in vain. Maybe I should have guessed sooner, but it was that sentence that was the clincher. I also tear up every time I read this story, even though I know exactly how it's going to end.

That's the mark of an outstanding story.
