Aussie Matthew Mitchem, one of 10 openly gay Olympics athletes (out of 10,500), pulled off an upset against the favored Chinese diver. Graeme Posted August 24, 2008 Report Share Posted August 24, 2008 I wanted to stay up and watch, but after his first dive, which wasn't one of his better ones, I turned the TV off. It was late, anyway. I woke up this morning to the news. I've just done some checking to see if he's the first gay gold medalist, but I found others. I think he's the first one to win a gold while being out, though :) He's certainly the first Australian to do so (he's the first Australian to compete at the Olympics while out). Congratulations, Matt! PS: I noticed in the bio at his website that he wasn't sure if he boyfriend could make it to Beijing. I read in the Sydney Morning Herald this morning that Lachlan, his boyfriend, made it to the games under a sponsorship deal Link to comment

I turned to my partner after the diver reacted and did some little thing with his hands, and I said, "no question, this guy is definitely gay." Glad to see my gaydar still works! Link to comment

colinian Posted August 29, 2008 Report Share Posted August 29, 2008 I watched the replay of his diving competition where he won the gold on TV last night, Comcast cable On Demand (it might still be available if you have Comcast). He was very emotional when he realized that he'd won the gold. The commentators said they think that he believed the Chinese diver (who was heavily favored, but messed up his final dive) had taken the gold and he had the silver. Especially when she remarked on how little they were wearing... Did you ask her what she thinks they should be wearing? That would have been an interesting conversation. It would have given you the opportunity to explain why they wear small, tight suits in order to gain the fastest speed in the water. I knew several of the guys on the swim team at my HS, and they would have preferred even smaller Speedos than the league allows -- more like a thong with a tight pouch. Ouch!! They also said swimming nude lowers their speed. And it entirely inappropriate for diving. Double OUCH!!! Sorry about that, guys. Colin Link to comment
