I knew this story was going to be good after seeing the multiple reference to growing rutabagas on this farm.

Of course it's going to be good, it's by Nicholas Hall, even the stuff of his I don't like, which is not much, is good. This story is great. So far I would class it amongst his best writing.

Not sure that "precocious" is an adequate word to describe these tykes.

I believe the correct adjective is Trouble with a capital T.

Ahh, I do remember the smell of my rural countryside, Pennsylvania in the spring, when farmers spread their fields with the bounty of manure--cow, pig, chicken--they had been saving up all winter.  That was the balance of Nature that I learned about as a kid.  Don't drive country roads with your windows open in the spring.  As awful as it was I have to say I miss it.

Also, don't drive close behind a tractor towing a muck-spreader.

Especially in a convertible with the top down.
