  1. Aarrgh! Not sure my patience is up to the task... Brilliant start to this story, I'm hooked, line and sinker - can't wait to find out what happens, what brought poor Thomas to this pass. I hope it all comes right for him in the end...
  2. I so rarely manage to write anything, that I'm particularly excited to announce that I have a new short story. It's called Escape and it's science fiction, and it'll be with you in the next few days if Mike accepts it. I hope you guys like it, it's a bit different from most of what I've written before. Edit: Mike has kindly accepted the story and tells me it will be posted on May 11th. Thank you Mike!
  3. I'm an elderly geek. We do exist, you know...!
  4. This is the sort of thing that makes a geek like me happy!
  5. Thanks, James, for bringing this to our attention. I just read it, it's a lovely story, a confident pitch-perfect use of second-person POV. A delight.
  6. The only wise course of action in the circumstances. Those still in the running are there because they are less wise...
  7. The technical term is 'cloacal ventilator'. I'm just itching to find an opportunity to bring that up in conversation sometime...
  8. It occurs to me that not everyone can see BBC content in other countries. So here is an example, searching YouTube for Ja'mie King will no doubt unearth more.
  9. I can't decide whether I think this is brilliant, or not at all brilliant... http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/item/b8ac25f3-25f8-46ce-a0da-c146494e5401?intc_type=singletheme&intc_location=threeonline&intc_campaign=threeonline&intc_linkname=article_jaimesguidetobeingawoman_contentcard29
  10. Not, since I'm not a US voter, that it's any of my business (except to the extent that the President of the US of A inevitably has enormous influence on the rest of the world) but I'm thinking it would be interesting if the next president was Hilary and her vice-president was Bernie...
  11. I have noticed decreased activity here; I've assumed that a large part of the reason for that is the reduced flow of new stories - and I haven't piped up and whinged about that because I share the blame for it. So here is my pledge: I will write at least one new story and post it here. I will do that expeditiously, and as soon as I've discovered what that word means. I will undertake also to post comments on as many other authors' new stories as I possibly can, and will be grateful if others will comment (good or bad, but constructive) on my stories too. I love AD and I love you guys, my fellow denizens. It is important to me that we don't become moribund. May that never happen.
  12. Hmm. Colin's post was black text on dark grey background on my laptop (Firefox in Ubuntu Linux). Didn't faze me, I just selected the text and it was readable.
  13. The honourable thing for Dunne to have done (!) would have been to think carefully about this argument, and then post a video reply to the young lad, declaring that his mind had been changed by his cogent argument and that he will henceforth campaign for full equality, including gay marriage. The rest of the UK, the Republic of Ireland and much of the Western World has embraced it and the planet continues to revolve on its axis...
  14. Is that what they're for? I did wonder. They're not fit for purpose, though, in that case...
  15. My legs involuntarily crossed when I read the punchline...
  16. Hear hear. Now, when are we going to hear from the man himself??!?
  17. This thread prompted me to re-read Camy's delightful story and for the first time I was struck with a comparison that hadn't occurred to me before: Narnia. Camy has all the imaginative brilliance of C S Lewis. He's nearly as quiet as Lewis currently, too....
  18. The Economist's Intelligence Unit (EIU) have, according to this BBC article, pronounced that a Donald Trump presidency is among the top ten global risks. In other words it would be dangerous, comparable to an upsurge in global terrorism or a collapse of the EU.
  19. Not me. The whole thing is sponsored by the BBC and broadcast, some on TV the rest on radio, so you can hear what you want to hear without having to get to central London to the Albert Hall. I live the other side of the country so it would be a major effort. Worth it for a particular concert, but not something I've yet done.
  20. The last night of the Proms is traditionally silly and over the top and this clip is a fine example of that. Generally, patriotism, and particularly nationalism, is considered rather infra dig in polite society, and the last night of the Proms is a glorious opportunity to let rip with sentiments that are normally kept well under control.
  21. Actually, it's "Britons never never never shall be slaves" when sung, or "Britons never will be slaves" when read from the original poem. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule,_Britannia!
