  1. So young and already so cynical! Love your analysis Colin.
  2. A poignant story and very well told, a great introduction to the writing of our newest AD Author. The story very ably portrays the half-comprehension of young people about their sexuality, and also the difficulties presented when an age gap of two years straddles the significant 16 year point, making the relationship in some parts of the world considered an adult/child liaison. A difficult subject very well handled, methinks. There's a line I can't quite make sense of: "Look, Leo, I'm putting it right next to Pika the Pokemon. Thanks him, "You didn't need to do that." There are three quotation marks, and 'Thanks him,' should be 'Thanks for it'?
  3. Yes a very soecial story... I'm reminded of wise advice I was given by a teacher (there wasn't much of it, so what there was I remember to this day). He'd asked me what I would do for a living and he was the music teacher so clearly hoped I would do something musical. I knew my skills were not up to earning a living from music performance, but I was also good at English, so I suggested maybe I could be a music critic. He said just one thing: "Well, try to be kind." If only the young critic in the story had been taught my my music teacher.
  4. Love it. I'm waiting to read the story of what Holmes and Watson did together in their tent...
  5. All the Windows machines I maintain are running Windows 7 and won't be being upgraded to Windows 10 if I have a say in the matter. Windows 7 works.
  6. What a great beginning. Now, Cole, look after this poor boy, he deserves a better future than his past. Make his dad look after him properly or you'll have me to answer to!
  7. Camy.... NUDGE NUDGE!
  8. Hey thanks Cole. Well, yes, these stories were cathartic to write, but it's quite a long time ago now, and I seem to have moved on. Recently I've been finding it hard to write anything at all but I may be able to come back to the boarding school theme. I actually had a pretty bad time at school and when recently I got a phone call from the school asking for money I bluntly told them no, and why. The lady must have passed my comments on, because I then got a letter apologising for the school's failure for me, and assuring me that it does much better these days, and hoping that I would keep in touch, and visit to see for myself. It brought it all back somewhat - and maybe I once more need to write a story or two to get it out of my system!
  9. Hi James and thank you so much. I think The Dance is one of my favourites. Yes you've remembered very well - actually there used to be two more stories in my Boarding School series, making four all told. I withdrew them some years ago in a wave of anxiety about depicting underage sex. Not a considered decision or anything, just a knee-jerk reaction at the time! I particularly like The Dance because in it I condensed a series of episodes that really took place during my time at school and added a gay plotline which tied them all together nicely. I really did attend just such a dance as the story tells, and was assaulted exactly as I described. Also I really did have a favourite dinner lady for whom I purchased red roses and she really did come and kiss me in the dining hall in front of everybody. There really was a tree that as far as I know no-one could climb but me, but sadly I didn't have a best friend with whom I discovered kissing.
  10. some Awesome Dude members actually get erections occasionally. Erections? Oh yes... I remember erections...
  11. Short-sighted hippo delighted to be reunited with its mother
  12. Bulky animal makes remarkable speed along the road despite extreme weight - pursued by hippopotamus
  13. I can't believe I didn't comment on this when Camy first posted it. It's fun, it's light, it's sunny and upbeat. A lovely short piece from Camy.
  14. Huggable bears can't hug all on their own, so I'm always on the lookout for a hug-partner...
  15. Aw, shucks - I'll bet you say that to all the boys!
  16. Well, to be fair to the BBC the article is an opinion piece by Will Self, a regular column by a man known to be extremely opinionated. The BBC does not necessarily endorse his opinion, but only considers it a sufficiently interesting opinion to warrant giving him airtime. Will Self is usually interesting, entertaining, sometimes infuriating.
  17. Not at all - here at AD we specialize in going off topic! Welcome to the forums Ken!
  18. A very good flash fiction. Intriguing and involving - quite a feat in such a short piece.
  19. Brilliant storytelling, full of historical detail enthrallingly presented. Thanks Mihangel. The Prefabs were factory-prefabricated and then transported to sites where they were intended as temporary accommodation until something more permanent could be provided. By January 1947 100,000 had been built. However they were lived in for years - and some are still in existence now. Residents have become fond of them and choose not to leave. These are now grade 2 listed (officially designated part of the nation's heritage and therefore cannot be demolished or altered without consultation) - this is a recent photo - note the TV aerials!
  20. Okay I'm now much enlightened - both by reading the Daily Mail article (I may have to go and lie down in a darkened room for a few hours) and by the New Statesman article that Larkin has referred me to. If I'd had to guess which paper might have described Owen as a simpering homosexual coward I would have guessed the Daily Mail.
  21. I can't help it, it just happens... I like having my belly rubbed, and I'm likely to bond with anyone who does it.
